Tre fratelli: Barry, Robin e Maurice, all'epoca poco più che adolescenti. Avrebbero dato inizio ad una leggenda, si sarebbero imposti come uno dei gruppi pop più raffinati e creativi (oltre che di maggior successo) della storia, ma nel 1965 i fratelli Gibb non potevano certamente saperlo: erano ancora una piccola realtà locale, ed infatti il loro primo album fu pubblicato solo in Australia dalla Leedon Records. Come facilmente intuibile dal titolo, il leader e compositore unico è il fratello maggiore Barry (19 anni all'epoca); ovviamente si tratta di un album ancora acerbo, di chiara matrice beatlesiana, eppure, a più di cinquant'anni dalla pubblicazione, queste 14 canzoni conservano intatto il loro appeal giovane e sbarazzino. La ricercatezza e la cura delle melodie e degli arrangiamenti che caratterizzerà tutta la prima fase della loro carriera è ancora dì lì a venire, qui però c'è tutta la freschezza, la passione e l'ingenuità di un debutto.
In alcune canzoni l'ombra dei quattro baronetti di Liverpool è fin troppo ingombrante: il beat ruffiano di "You Wouldn't Know", "Peace Od Mind" e "To Be Or Not To Be" e le dolci e cantilenanti melodie di "Don't Say Goodbye" e "Take Hold Of That Star" sono esempi di un sound che seppur gradevole e catchy risulta decisamente troppo impersonale e standardizzato. Peccatucci di gioventù che si perdonano senza pensarci troppo, anche perché già nel 1965 i Bee Gees hanno una marcia in più, il trio "Timber"-"Claustrophobia"-"Could It Be", pillole di merseybeat vivace e spensierato; ad un livello più creativo troviamo "I Was A Lover, A Leader Of Men" e "Wine And Women", spigliate canzonette a ritmo di walzer, salendo ancora le squisite ballate "And The Children Laughing" e "Follow The Wind", primi esempi di quel dolce candore folk che diventerà un marchio di fabbrica del trio negli anni successivi.
"How Love Was True" è caratterizzata da una sottilissima vena di dolce psichedelia nel suo tranquillo incedere ma la gemma del disco è senza ombra di dubbio "I Don't Think It's Funny"; senza esagerare questa canzone dovrebbe rientrare tra i grandi classici del Nostri: una soffice e semplicissima ballata dal cuore d'oro, in cui l'inconfondibile voce di Robin interpreta alla perfezione una melodia già all'altezza dei capolavori del Pop che seguiranno questo semisconosciuto esordio.
Come canta qualcuno, queste sono solo quattordici canzonette, niente più e niente meno, eppure è impossibile non affezionarsi a questo album, nel 1965 i Bee Gees sono un gruppo esordiente, e quello di questo LP è un pop bambino, in tutti i sensi: questo è il suo limite ma anche la sua più grande forza e motivo di appeal.
