Era il 1979 e un certo Ozzy Osbourne veniva licenziato dai Black Sabbath a causa dei suoi problemi con alcool e droga. Nello stesso anno un altro tizio di nome Ronnie James Dio se ne andava dai Rainbow di Blackmore perchè stavano prendendo un'impronta un pò troppo commerciale per i suoi gusti. Così Tony Iommy (il vero Sabbath insieme a Butler) contattò Dio e fu fatta.
In meno di un anno quel gran capolavoro di "Heaven and Hell" era già nei negozi. Non stiamo parlando di un album tipo "Paranoid" o "Black Sabbath", che contenevano atmosfere più sulfuree e allucinogene, ma di un disco di puro Heavy Metal basato sulla possente voce di Dio e i riff potenti di Iommy.
"Heaven and Hell" parte subito in quinta con la cavalcata "Neon Knights" che ci apre le porte di un mondo fantasy e gotico in pieno stile Ronnie James Dio. Segue l'apocalittica "Children of the Sea" che come la quiete prima della tempesta inizia con una sognante chitarra acustica fino a quando l'atmosfera si fa cupa e infernale dove Dio ci avverte che il cielo stà cadendo, il sole si sta oscurando, non ce via di fuga. Poi abbiamo "Lady Evil" che corrisponde a "Evil Woman" con ritmiche rock'n'roll e un basso martellante, sembra proprio che i Black Sabbath abbiano avuto delle brutte esperienze con le donne (c'è anche "Dirty Women"). Eccoci arrivati alla titletrack un'opera mastodontica con quel riff bello da far paura e una parte ritmica che entra in testa per poi esplodere nel finale con un Dio poetico come non mai e Iommy che ci regala uno degli assoli più belli mai scritti. Poi l'allegra "Wishing Well" in cui Dio diventa un mago e ci esaudisce un sogno. Le tastiere ci introducono "Die Young" un pezzo che suona quasi come un Carpe Diem "...So live for today, tomorrow never comes..." è un'altro grandissimo brano arricchito dall'uso dei sintetizzatori e da una voce di Dio sottile e sublime a metà canzone. In "Walk Away" Dio e compagni abbandonano i temi fantasy per dedicarsi all'amore. In conclusione troviamo "Lonely Is the Word" che da una sensazione di solitudine che ha la capacità di far commuovere.
Il disco nel complesso è perfetto e quindi credo di aver nulla di aggiungere ma penso che non sarà moltro gradito ai fans di Ozzy.
