Insieme a 12 Stones, 3 Doors Down, Puddle Of Mudd e Staind, il rock-post/grunge del nuovo millennio ha un'altra band protagonista: i Breaking Benjamin.
Dopo essersi fatti conoscere con "Saturate" e dopo "Blow Me Away", splendida soundtrack del game Halo 2, nel 2004 esce "We Are Not Alone Here".
Titolo e copertina ad effetto, che potrebbe far pensare a riferimenti extraterrestri, niente di ciò, testi semplici senza riferimenti particolari.
Dopo la discreta "Cold", "Simple Design" risulta di buon livello, orecchiabile e con presenti ma mai prepotenti riff di chitarra. E' un pezzo che sconfina dal classico post/grunge per entare nel soft rock, una caduta di potenza che il leader Benjamin Burnley cerca di coprire con un discreto urlo senza troppe pretese.
Dopo un ascolto iniziale, l'album sembra essere leggermente più "pop" rispetto al vecchio stile grintoso e ruvido del precedente lavoro.
Bella "Follow Me", che rialza un inizio un pò deludente, semplice, emozionante, un concentrato di buona base alla batteria e buona prestazione sonora di Benjamin Burnley.
"Firefly" è il fiore all'occhiello dell'album;come ogni pezzo trainante che si rispetti, l'orecchiabilità è elevata ma non manca grinta e ruvidità, anzi Burnley è più "grunge"che mai, finale emozionante con assolo di chitarra ed "explicit lyrics"di Burnley, energia al basso e soprattutto alla batteria in poco più di 3 minuti (una delle caratteristiche della band è proprio quella di saper racchiudere i pezzi in brevi archi di tempo).
"Breaking Fall" rimanda alla fantastica "Blow Me Away", ma la base è decisamente più leggera, il livello sonoro torna ai livelli dei primissimi pezzi dell'album, poca voglia di riscaldare le corde vocali da parte del vocalist e melodie lente, a tratti un pò noiose.
Ancora peggio in "Forget It", sound irritante, mancanza di ispirazione e accordi blandi.
Torna lo stile nu grunge ma non la grinta in "Sooner or Later", ritornello che scivola gradevolmente ma i livelli sono poco più che discreti, come del resto in tutto l'album.
Interessante il testo, che parla del cmplicato rapporto amore/odio del songwriter Burnley.
Ottima "Breakdown", più frizzante rispetto alle canzoni precedenti, a mio avviso è stata piazzata strategicamente nella parte finale dell'album per rendere l'ascolto più accattivamente visto che comunque, in questo CD, di grandi stravolgimenti sonori non ce ne sono.
"Away" riporta alla precedente "Sooner Or Later", ci voleva un pizzico di fantasia in più, si poteva evitare. Per fortuna nel finale tornano le urla.
Finalmente torna il classico ritmo intrigante in "Believe", base grunge e buona prestazione da parte di Burnley, che ritorna a fare il padrone con le sue urla di buon livello, questo è il pezzo più ruvido dell'album.
Cala la quiete nel finale con "Rain", arrivati a fine album ci può stare, chitarra acustica e base che riporta al Brit.
Dopo un paio di ascolti qualcuno potrebbe rimanere deluso, per carità "We Are Not Alone Here"è un album di discreto livello, ma un pò per mancanza di idee, un pò perchè probabilmente la band è stata costretta a strizzare l'occhio alle charts, l'impostazione base della maggioranza dei pezzi risulta un pò scontata.
Bene "Simple Design" e "Breakdown", benissimo la hit "Firefly", meno soddisfacenti "Breaking Fall" e "Forget It" .
Solo per gli amanti del rock grunge, daltronde i gruppi sopracitati (Puddle Of Mudd, 12 Stones, 3 Doors Down ecc. ) negli ultimi anni non hanno saputo fare meglio, forse il termine post grunge sarebbe meglio eliminarlo, anzi secondo me non è mai esistito.
Chiamamolo semplicemente 'Rock', quindi gustatevi pure il discreto rock di "We Are Not Alone Here".
