Un suono nervoso, elettrico, disseminato lungo le dodici tracce di questo disco come gli impulsi elettrici che viaggiano attraverso la rete di nervi nel corpo umano. Quello di "Nerve Net", uscito nel 1992, è un Brian Eno molto distante dalle soffuse atmosfere di album precedenti (specie quelli in cui nel titolo conia la definizione di ambient music). Qui assistiamo alla trasfigurazione del materiale musicale, genericamente ascrivibile al rock o a qualche sua deriva stilistica, in un ibrido innervato di ritmi tesi e sincopati, di un'elettronica che si agita su uno sfondo sonoro scuro e notturno, di atmosfere contaminate da jazz e addirittura hip-hop (in "Ali Click").
Una musica strumentale per vocazione perché anche dove compare la voce umana essa è trattata alla stregua di puro fatto sonoro: sia quando è lontana e sbiadita (nel brano di apertura, "Fractal Zoom"), sia quando si presta alla declamazione invece che al canto ("Wire Shock"), sia quando è distorta o filtrata da vocoder e altri effetti ("My Squelchy Life"). Lo stesso Eno in più occasioni è presente con la sua voce ma accade ad esempio che egli si limiti a cantare una strofa soltanto (nella synth song "The Roil, The Choke") per poi disinteressarsi del brano e abbandonarlo alla sua prosecuzione strumentale.
"Nerve Net" raduna una schiera di musicisti ospiti, circa 25 (senza contare le voci recitanti) e sì, c'è anche Robert Fripp. Molto divertente, nel booklet del cd, una lista di 30 definizioni che seguono la frase «This record is:». Ne riporto qualcuna: «Questo disco è: come la paella / un casino autocontraddittorio / dissonante / frenetico / evanescente / surriscaldato / senza dio / tecnicamente ingenuo / troppo vago / revisionista / esibizionista senza vergogna / troppo / non abbastanza / il lavoro di una mente disturbata», e così via.
Di sicuro questa è una musica molto densa, da assaporare con gusto un brano alla volta e nel suo insieme. Una musica che fa della saturazione il suo credo, fino a dissolversi nel suono di un pianoforte lunare (moon piano, così lo definisce l'autore) nell'ultimo brano, "Decentre". Se riponete delle aspettative in "Nerve Net", Brian Eno ha tutta l'intenzione di accontentarvi.
