La prima uscita di rilievo nel panorama musicale britannico del 2008 è questo "Do You Like Rock Music?" dei British Sea Power.
Il nuovo disco è il terzo del gruppo di Brighton. La band, dopo l'apprezzato esordio "The Decline Of British Sea Power", ha fatto breccia nei cuori e nelle classifiche britanniche col discreto "Open Season", grazie anche ad un singoletto azzeccato come "It Ended On An Oily Stage". Indicati come eredi naturali dei Joy Division, il loro sound sembra in realtà spaziare tra più generi ed influenze.
Chitarre epiche e ridondanti, oltre ad un sound che alterna momenti di estrema orecchiabilità a sprazzi sonori pungenti e spigolosi, sono caratteristiche del dna sonoro del quartetto inglese.
Anticipato di ben tre mesi dal "Krankenhaus?" e. p., il nuovo lavoro conferma sostanzialmente tutto ciò che di buono la band ha espresso sinora.
Dalla breve e funerea apertura con "All In It" sino alla straniante e lunghissima conclusione di "We Close Our Eyes", siamo di fronte ad un disco non particolarmente brillante ma pur sempre valido, che vive più sulla resa sonora (ottima, oltretutto i B. S. P. sono da considerare una grandissima live band) che sulla qualità intrinseca di ogni singolo brano. Fanno eccezione cose come "Lights Out For Darkier Skies", che inizia con una bella e sana schitarrata unita ad una frenetica rullata di batteria; quando ti sembra di aver già capito tutto, il pezzo si dilunga sino a più di sei minuti di durata, sfoggiando cambi di tempo e melodia come se fossero tre o quattro canzoni in una sola. Bella pure l'orecchiabile "Waving Flags", scelta non a caso per la rotazione radiofonica. "No Lucifer" si avvicina (troppo) pericolosamente al versante Editors, cosicché risulta gradevole giusto per il rotto della cuffia; certo l'interpretazione cantilenante di Yan non aiuta. Estremamente apprezzabile, invece, "Canvey Island", in emozionante crescendo. "Down On The Ground", già presente in "Krankenhaus?", è un rock 'n roll piuttosto tirato (così come "A Trip Out" - in cui la presenza ectoplasmatica dei Kasabian c'è e si sente - e "Atom", anche quest'ultima nel succitato ep) che muta in caotico nel bel finale. Gradevole e ben strutturato lo strumentale "The Great Skua", ipermelodica la thrillsiana "Open The Door"; nel mezzo, trova posto una claustrofobica "No Need To Cry".
Nonostante "Do You Like..." sia un dico più che sufficiente, dai talentuosi B. S. P. c'era francamente da aspettarsi qualcosina in più.
L'anno britannico in musica inizia, comunque, più che bene.

Questa è un'epica gentile, è un ossimoro suonante, un epica delicata pienamente coerente con l'esordio dei BSP.
Insieme ad inni suadenti come "Lights Out for Darker Skies" e "Waving Flags", il disco definisce un stadium rock a misura d’uomo.
