Nonostante segua questo sito da molto tempo, solo oggi ho deciso di iscrivermi, e di pubblicare commenti, recensioni, classifiche, etc. Questa è la mia prima recensione: spero che siate clementi con me, e che mi possiate suggerire varie dritte da usare il futuro. Ma bando alle ciance, ecco la recensione!
Il disco in questione è "Something Wild", primo LP datato 1997 della band finlandese Children of Bodom. I 5 componenti del gruppo, all'epoca appena diciottenni, capitanati da Alexi Laiho, danno alle stampe un album di breve durata (appena 36 minuti), ma molto violento.
Non appena premiamo il tasto play, udiamo rumori di tuoni ed una risata malefica; e dopo un minuto parte la musica, mettendo subito le cose in chiaro: qui non si scherza. La traccia in questione è "Deadnight Warrior", secondo me la più brutta del lotto, visto che non mi ha mai ispirato 'violenza' più di tanto.
Già dalla successiva, però, il livello qualitativo si alza di molto: "In The Shadows" è una mini-suite di 6 minuti in cui si fanno sentire già le influenze neo-classiche specialmente nelle tastiere di Wirman, unite al death metal. Ottimo qui il lavoro svolto dal basso e dalla chitarra ritmica, che sostengono con forza i 6 minuti e oltre della canzone.
Le successive sono meravigliose: "Red Light In My Eyes, Pt. 1" e "Red Light In My Eyes, Pt. 2" sono le canzoni in cui si fanno sentire più le influenze neo-classiche: l'intro della prima è ripresa dalla "Invenzione n. 13" di J.S. Bach; mentre l'intro della seconda dalla "Sinfonia n. 25" e successivamente possiamo udire il 'Confutatis' tratto dal "Requiem", entrambe le composizione sono di W.A. Mozart. Sapiente qui è il lavoro di amalgamazione di queste melodie con l'asprezza delle tracce, a tratti davvero violente (nella 'Pt. 1' viene usato il blast beat). Il risultato è davvero curioso ed intrigante.
La quinta traccia è la più celebre dell'album, ed anche quella più melodica, come possiamo intuire dall'intro: "Lake Bodom" riassume concettualmente tutto l'album, e la trovo perfetta per far conoscere la band a un neofita del quintetto di Espoo. Sembra di respirare l'aria di morte di quel maledetto lago a pochi chilometri da Espoo, in cui avvenne una efferata strage.
La successiva canzone è la mia preferita della band: "The Nail" è anch'essa una mini-suite di oltre 6 minuti in cui Alexi e compagnia danno prova di tutta la loro tecnica e bravura. L'intro è curiosa: i suoni uditi vengono dal celebre film horror ''Nightmare'', mentre le parole provengono da "Ben Hur". Ovviamente non può mancare nemmeno qua la musica classica, infatti stavolta viene usata nientemeno che la superba ''Toccata e fuga in re minore, BWV 565'' del maestro J.S. Bach; mentre per 5 minuti il gruppo crea atmosfere apocalittiche e devastanti, attingendo da tutto il loro repertorio; memorabili le veloci cavalcate lungo la canzone, e gli sweep finali di Alexi.
La settima e ultima traccia dell'LP è "Touch Like Angela Of Death", unica con testo nel booklet. La tastiera ancora fa da padrona, in un turbine di note e di suoni di campane. Particolarità della canzone è che contiene una ghost track: dopo alcuni minuti di silenzio possiamo udire alcuni semplici ma suggestivi fraseggi alla tastiera, suonati da Alexi e da Alexander ubriachi nello studio.
In conclusione posso dire che questo è senza dubbio il mio album preferito della band finlandese. Unica nota di rammarico è il fatto che dal successivo LP in poi scompaiano le influenze neo-classiche, per fare spazio ad un sound più 'ironmaideniano'. La batteria fa il suo sporco lavoro come si vede, il basso e la chitarra ritmica sostengono egregiamente tutto il lavoro, la tastiera e la chitarra solista si scatenano in tutta la loro bravura per creare assoli perfetti; e improvvisi silenzi degli altri strumenti in cui si ode solo la tastiera (l'intero album è costellato di questi momenti). Nota dolente è la voce di Alexi, che in certi punti è fastidiosa.
