Ben pochi artisti nel panorama della musica rock sono riusciti ad essere poliedrici come Chris Cornell. Al cantautore di Seattle, una delle voci più belle e potenti in circolazione, infatti si può dire di tutto tranne che non abbia mai cercato di rimettersi in gioco e di cambiare stile. Simbolo del movimento grunge degli anni 80/90 assieme ai suoi Soundgarden, conobbe il successo mondiale con sonorità che andavano anche a sfiorare l'heavy metal condite con una buona dose di psichedelia. Adesso ecco che Chris è pronto a farsi conoscere anche cantante solista, dopo un primo tentativo (Euphoria Morning) fallimentare e una parentesi con gli Audioslave (assieme agli strumentisti dei Rage Against the Machine).
Il disco è ovviamente trainato dalla hit "You Know My Name", salita in vetta alle classifiche grazie all'apparizione come colonna sonora nell'ultimo film di 007. Gli altri due estratti "No Such Thing" e "Arms Around Your Love" sono entrambi molto belli ed esprimono al meglio i due stili che Cornell percorre in quest'album. Il primo è un pezzo molto potente, con una base ottima e Cornell che continua ancora a maltrattare le sue già martoriate corde vocali. La seconda è una canzone pop\rock molto dolce, forse il singolo più soft dell'intero ripertorio di Cornell. Anche se estremamente commerciale, resta comunque decisamente gradevole.
Purtroppo, delle restanti canzoni dell'album (in tutto sono 14 più due bonus track) nessuna lascia più di tanto il segno. "Poison Eye" ha un bel ritmo ma è rovinata da un assolo (se così si può definire) orribile; si tratta di puro rumore, peggio del peggiore Tom Morello. "Killing Birds" è già più carina, e finalmente ci troviamo in presenza di una parte di chitarra molto bella. "Billie Jean" è una cover acustica della celebberima hit di Michael Jackson; anche se irriconoscibile (non fosse per il titolo) è uno dei pezzi meglio riusciti, con la meravigliosa voce di Cornell espressa nel migliore possibile dei modi. "Silence The Voices" ricorda molto alcune ballate degli Audioslave (un po' "The Curse", un po' "Wide Awake"), ma è comunque un pezzo molto orecchiabile. La qualità media dell'album si abbassa notevolmente a causa di canzoni come "Safe And Sound", "Ghosts", "Scar On The Sky", "Finally Forever" e "Disappearing Act", troppo sdolcinate e lente. Se ne sarebbe potuto fare a meno. Inutili anche le due bonus track: se il disco fosse stato chiuso dalla bellissima "You Know My Name" ci avrebbe sicuramente guadagnato.
In conclusione, da questa nuova avventura solista del grande Chris ne è venuto fuori un album di discreta qualità: commerciale (a partire dalla copertina: sembra un cd di Duncan James o qualche altro stupido idolo delle ragazzine) e ripetitivo, è uno di quei dischi che annoiano presto. Consigliato a chi è rimasto catturato da "You Know My Name" o adora il pop\rock più stereotipato. In tutti quelli che hanno amato il casino dei Soundgarden (ma anche dei primi Audioslave) provocherà un'immensa malinconia.

Chris si prepara quindi al ritorno solista dopo "Euphoria Morning", con un album impostato su coordinate pop-rock di alto appeal radiofonico.
"Billie Jean" (cover a sorpresa) irriconoscibile, rallentata ed emozionante, con un'interpretazione Cornelliana da urlo.
