Confesso che se il voto fosse in decimi sarei stato un po' più severo con questo The 1st Chapter, dandogli un sette. Ma non me la sono proprio sentita di dargli 3 stelle, perchè reputo questo primo lavoro del quintetto Norvegese ben più che sufficiente.
Parlerò di questo disco soffermandomi più sulla sua figura globale che sulla valutazione dei singoli pezzi, dando una sorta di "guida all'acquisto o meno".
Il genere è un prog metal con matrice Thrash, come si evince dai riffs di chitarra e dalla batteria, molto heavy. Partiamo dal difetto: Il gruppo non sembra aver del tutto raggiunto una piena personalità, e risente molto delle influenze dei "mostri sacri" del genere (Dream Theater, Symphony X e Threshold su tutti). Ma del resto sono solo al primo disco. Piccolo problema a parte, gli scandinavi hanno dato alla luce un disco veramente interessante e godibile, con pezzi piuttosto vari e un discreto assortimento di stili diversi: Ci sono canzoni più pesanti, altre più tranquille, alcune eleganti ballads impreziosite da archi e fiati, un pezzo strumentale che risulterebbe ottimo se non fosse che i Dream Theater esistono da un bel po' ormai...(avete presente "The Dance Of Eternity"?), e una "Epic" da 18 minuti che risulta, ahimè, un po' stucchevole, ma nella sua interezza non male.
Da segnalare soprattutto l'opener "Sin" e "Why Am I Here?" tra gli episodi più brillanti del disco.
Tecnicamente i cinque non sono davvero niente male, sia nell'esecuzione dei pezzi che negli arrangiamenti. La voce è stata criticata da alcuni, ma personalmente,anche se come stile si è già sentito, la trovo più che buona. Belli gli assoli, piuttosto melodici e di grande impatto. Un punto forte a livello di composizione è appunto la melodicità delle canzoni: si è trovato un ottimo mix tra pesantezza del metal e melodie più che orecchiabili, ma difficilmente banali, anche se come ho già detto non del tutto innovative.
In conclusione, un disco che mi sento di consigliare ai fans del Prog metal più diretto, senza troppi fronzoli. Un gran bel disco, anche se non proprio un capolavoro.
Le premesse per un ottimo gruppo ci sono tutte, spero (e credo, tutto sommato) che la band trovi modo anche di distinguersi un po'di più dai loro predecessori.
