In quello che fu definito il periodo technopop dei Clan of Xymox, il gruppo olandese, oltre a farsi chiamare semplicemente "Xymox", diede alle stampe il disco di maggior successo della loro carriera, ossia "Twist of Shadows", grazie anche al passaggio dalla 4AD di Ivo Watts alla major Polygram.
L'album ebbe il merito principale di imporsi sul mercato statunitense, dove vendette trecentomila copie e in cui ancora oggi gli Xymox possono contare su un corposo zoccolo duro di fans che li segue con costanza.
In una intervista letta su internet che potete facilmente reperire, Ronny Moorings, singer fondatore della band, ha pesantemente rinnegato l'album, giudicandolo troppo commerciale e non ricalcante il vero spirito suo e della sua creatura musicale.
Io al posto suo non sarei così categorico, visto il successo del disco che li ha fatti conoscere anche oltre i confini del vecchio continente.
"Twist of Shadows", infatti, è un buon disco, anche se pesantemente influenzato dal synth-pop ottantiano che andava per la maggiore in quegli anni, ma fortunatamente privo di quegli eccessi plastici sonori tanto di moda nel periodo.
Insomma, l'esternazione del buon Ronny mi sembra l'ennesimo tentativo di far vedere che si è un puro e duro per far piacere ai fans più tradizionalisti che non ti perdonano nessuna virata commerciale.
Ed infatti, dopo qualche tempo ed un sensibile calo nelle vendite del disco successivo "Phoenix", si tornò al vecchio nome "Clan of Xymox", a suoni più marcatamente electrogoth ed all'inserimento della chitarra in quello che è, ancora oggi, il loro tradizionale stile musicale.
Le canzoni più rappresentative e più degne di nota sono anche i singoli, melodici e danzerecci, di Twist of Shadows, ossia "Evelyn", ennesima canzone che ha per titolo un nome femminile, costante della disco dei Clan of Xymox, "Obsession", il cui clip veniva passato addirittura da Mtv, "Imagination", forse la loro canzone più commerciale in assoluto, in cui sono stati addirittura fatti paragoni con gli Spandau Ballet, e la depechemodiana "Blind Hearts".
Trascurabili, invece, gli episodi più lenti e darkeggianti, troppo di maniera, con l'unica eccezione della strumentale e conclusiva "Clementina".
Insomma, alla fine dei conti i Clan Of Xymox bene hanno fatto ad abbandonare il synthpop per l'electrogoth attuale, ma "Twist of Shadows" comunque rappresenta un passo importante nella carriera della band, che merita un vostro ascolto.
