Mi appresto a recensire un gruppo del quale ho sempre avuto solo questo album, e che non ho mai seguito abbastanza. A suo tempo il disco mi piacque abbastanza, e tutt'ora devo ammettere che lo ascolto con piacere, sebbene i miei gusti siano cambiati da quel 2005 quando uscì ed io lo acquistai. La band è quella dei Cold, gruppo statunitense di matrice postgrunge - nu-metal, e l'album in questione è "A Different Kind Of Pain". Da notare, ho detto "di matrice", perché se cercate quei due generi qui non ne troverete affatto. Troverete semmai buona tecnica, stile, qualche buon pezzo, qualche ballatona, frammenti di cuore dimenticati tra qualche solco del cd e del buon rock con venature metal da radio. Non fraintendetemi, l'album non è pessimo, si attesta su poco più della sufficienza, ma ripeto, è molto piacevole.
Consideriamo per esempio "Feel It In Your Heart": talvolta sembra di sentire i Nickelback (e per me già è orrore in generale), eppure la canzone scorre bene. E' una semi ballata agrodolce con chitarrone metal a sottolineare un ben chorus, con la voce del cantante, Scooter Ward, molto ricca di pathos e di intensità.
"Anathomy Of A Tidal Wave" è sicuramente una delle punte più orecchiabili del disco, con un ritornello che sicuramente canticchierete solo dopo una volta che l'avrete sentita, mentre la title track è un'intensa ballata costruita intorno ad una buona sezione di piano, dove il cantante mette in tavola tutte le sue emozioni e il suo dolore. Mi sa molto di abbraccio sotto la pioggia dopo una lite con la persona che ami, di pacca sulla spalla di un amico che ti viene incontro quando meno te lo aspetti, di foto della tua infanzia ritrovate in un vecchio album dalla copertina inguardabile e tipicamente anni ottanta. Sono clichè lo so, però qualche corda la tocca questa traccia, è innegabile.
Di tutt'altra pasta sono "When Heaven's Not Far Away", "God's Song", "When Angels Fly Away" e "Ocean". Qui il gruppo, seppur confezionando brani molto catchy e immediati, tira fuori un accenno di cattiveria musicale in più, che si traduce in una maggiore presenza metallica e in qualche passaggio un po' più consistente e roccioso. Tra le quattro citate segnalerei maggiormente la conclusiva "Ocean", dove tutto quadra molto bene: la voce è modulata in modi diversi veicolando un discreto spettro di emozioni, la sezione ritmica è molto puntuale e presente e la melodia è molto incentrata su semplici ed efficaci ritornelli.
Per chi conosce bene i Cold quest'album sarà magari un deciso passo indietro, nel quale la band si è venduta al mercato lasciandosi andare a facili melodie orecchiabili e a ballate "strappamutande". Dal mio punto di vista di persona che non li conosceva e, ripeto, praticamente non li conosce, l'album invece si attesta su un buon sette: le carte in tavola per piacere ai più ce le ha, la band sa innegabilmente suonare e non ci trovo nulla di male nel rendersi un po' più orecchiabili. Certo, se gruppi che venero lo facessero magari storcerei la bocca, ma siccome sono mezzo profano per questo gruppo l'operazione mi ha convinto abbastanza. Non c'è growl, né scream, né rabbia urlata né riff roboanti, ma solo la voglia di confezionare un buon prodotto con un discreto spicchio di cuore dentro.
