"Miami Beach, Chicks with Dicks!!!" Wha Hooo! Viene da urlare alla Damon Albarn a sentire il nuovo disco dei Cornershop. Finalmente qualcosa di nuovo, spiritoso ed ironico senza strafare, senza prendere le distanze dal passato in maniera radicale. Insomma si capisce subito che sono loro anche se scarseggia il sitar e gli strumenti indiani che li hanno resi famosi. Ma che voglia di vivere che emanano!! La citazione con cui ho cominciato la recensione è tratta dal singolo che precedeva l'albumo dal titolo "Lessons learned from Rocky I to Rocky III", che come spesso accade è la meno interessante della fatica di Tjinder Singh e soci. Definire "nuovo" il suono di questo disco è comunque arduo. E' indubbiamente retrò, ricorda l'aroma dei Village People o di Donna Summer e strizza l'occhio alla disco moderna con alcuni brani (Music Plus). Non mancano autocitazioni di "Brimful of Asha" (Staging the Plaguing...) e della mitica "Jullandar Shere" ("Spectral Mornings", autentico capolavoro degli anni zero). Un insieme di fuzzy tunes e loop ripetuti all'infinito in maniera ossessiva, senza insistere inutilmente sui suoni indianeggianti. Per chi fosse collezionista e conoscesse il side project denominato Clinton, questo disco sembra coniugare le divagazioni sul tema del side project con la solidità dei Cornershop. La canzone "People Power" viene proprio dai Clinton. Il tutto senza essere banali, che al giorno d'oggi, sembra essere l'unica arma per emergere. Chi ha sentito l'ultimo singolo degli Oasis sa cosa intendo. Unica caduta di stile: la canzone 6 in stile reggae.
