Cosa sarebbe la vita senza le piccole sorprese quotidiane?
Una di queste per me è stata la scoperta di questo album dei Curved Air che, pur conoscendo ed amando il gruppo, non avevo mai preso in considerazione, soprattutto sapendolo il frutto di una reunion postuma del gruppo originario (con Khon al posto di Eyre) fatta nel '74 per saldare i conti col fisco inglese con già Stewart Copeland a scalpitare dietro le quinte (era infatti il manager di quel tour). E invece ecco uno dei miglior live che io abbia mai sentito, in cui i classici del gruppo vengono reinterpretati con grinta, trasporto, passione e, sempre, con un'impeccabile perizia tecnica.
Soprattutto una Sonia Kristina in stato di grazia fa rivivere lo spirito della Joplin in brani come "It Happened Today", "Back Street Luv" e "Maria Antoinette", quest'ultima con quel geniaccio di Monkman ancora più in evidenza rispetto alla versione in studio. Ma il vero climax, a mio parere, si raggiunge con l'aggressiva "Propositions" introdotta dal grido belluino della Kristina: un grandioso omaggio alle strutture iterative Rileyane (alla cui "Rainbow in Curved Air" il gruppo deve il nome") riprodotte dal sintetizzatore VCS3 e dall'effetto eco applicato alla chitarra di Monkman ed al violino di Way. Sia benedetto il fisco inglese per aver consentito ai Curved Air di registrare questo degnissimo epitaffio live.

Curved Air sono un gruppo prog britannico formatosi a Londra nel 1970, noto per l’uso prominente del violino e la voce di Sonja Kristina. Il nome deriva da “A Rainbow in Curved Air” di Terry Riley.
