Dopo una serie di produzioni buone ma non troppo i Darkthrone ritornano sulle scene con questo “Hate them”… e già dal titolo si capisce che Fenriz e Nocturno Culto non hanno intenzione di fare prigionieri.
7 potenti inni demoniaci in puro Darkthrone sytle, 7 brani in cui l'ugola catarrosa di Nocturno Culto, alternando inglese e norvegese, grida anatemi anticristiani, mentre Fenriz (batterista, nonché principale compositore ed autore di testi della band) annerisce le pelli della sua batteria con la potenza e la velocità di sempre.
I brani sono nel classico evil extreme norwegian black metal style tipico dei Darkthrone, vero marchio di fabbrica della band reso famoso da album come "A Blaze...", "Under A Funeral Moon" e "Transilvanian Hunger".
Se possedete già i suddetti album e pensate che sia dovere morale di un gruppo stravolgere la propria musica ad ogni uscita, forse "Hate Them" non incontrerà i vostri favori... ma che ci volete fare, questi sono i Darkthrone, prendere o lasciare.
In una scena black sempre più asfittica e dedita al mero riciclo di idee, "Hate Them" si segnala come una delle migliori uscite del 2003, anni luce in vantaggio sui dischi delle centinaia di gruppi clone del duo norvegese.
