Secondo lavoro dell'ex dandy dei Japan. Se il primo, "Brilliant Trees", pur essendo una grandiosa debut opera, denunciava cmq disorganicità varie nella scelta dei pezzi (echi passati dei Japan si contrapponevano a sonorità prettamente intimistiche, o a inaspettate ballate acustiche), con "Gone To Earth" il nostro, dopo ampia riflessione, e maturazione, assembla delle ottime e più organiche canzoni, chiamando saggiamente a raccolta alcuni dei suoi "amici" più influenti e bravi: un Bob Fripp al massimo della forma, il fratello Steve Jansen ai tamburi, Kenny Wheeler, il non dimenticato Richard Barbieri alle tastiere, e altri session men di colta estrazione. Ne esce fuori un capolavoro, se no altro ragionato. Di chiara ispirazione ambient, raccoglie sul primo lato canzoni (se mai si possono sintetizzare così), sul secondo strumentali in tema.
Il disco, originariamente, doveva essere una raccolta di pezzi ambient, ma, non ricordo chi, qualcuno convinse Sylvian a... cantarci sopra. Il metodo non è di solito dei più ortodossi, ma il risultato, cari miei, lascia sbigottiti.
S'inizia con "Taking The Veil", con un grande Phil Palmer che ricama alla chitarra acustica supportato da Jansen immenso e teutonico. Un down tempo che incanta, un apertura sul nuovo universo sonoro di Sylvian.
Altre gemme: "Before the Bullfight", composita e avvolgente, wave, ipnotica e lirica, con un Fripp al guitar synth a livelli stratosferici. Il disco propone poi sul lato 2 brani strumentali con medesima intonazione. Tutto il mood del disco rimanda a suoni magmatici, ancestrali, ritmi ipnotici e suoni potenti, chitarre "spaziate", un lirismo melodico abbagliante... un opera "grassa", potente, sul quale Sylvian ricame alcune delle sue melodie più azzeccate e toccanti.
Un affresco sonoro degno dei migliori tramonti della nostra vita.
