Sottovalutato.
Ecco, questo è sicuramente il primo termine che viene associato a "Spiritual Healing", senza dubbio il lavoro meno apprezzato dai fans di quella che di li a poco (secondo me) sarebbe diventata la più grande band che l'intero universo abbia mai visto venire alla luce.
Eh si, è proprio difficile recensire questo album, il loro peggiore in assoluto per molti, (a mio parere però ai livelli di "Leprosy") ma sicuramente sempre da tenere in bella mostra nella discografia dei mitici Death.
Mettiamo subito una cosa in chiaro: questi non sono complimenti gratuiti scritti solo per rendere omaggio a Chuck Schuldiner, il miglior musicista mai esistito (vi ricordo che parlo sempre secondo i miei pareri), ma "Spiritual Healing" merita ogni singola parola presente in questa recensione e la storia dei Death passa anche per questo disco.
Quest' album rappresenta inoltre un notevole passo avanti nella maturazione della band floridiana anche se, come noi tutti sappiamo, il bello deve ancora arrivare.
Si deve registrare un notevole miglioramento nella tecnica e nella produzione, ma non è tutto perché sono molte le caratteristiche che rendono questo lavoro unico e diverso dai due precedenti. Mentre in "Scream Bloody Gore" e "Leprosy" troviamo canzoni violente, cattivissime e dai testi incentrati sull'horror più splatter, in questo cd le songs cominciano a diventare più lunghe, ragionate, dove troviamo un pizzico di melodia e (elemento importantissimo) dei testi sensibilmente più maturi e intriganti, ispirati ai problemi della società ("Living Monstruosity", praticamente una denuncia contro la tossicodipendenza ne è un esempio lampante) che con il tempo si evolveranno fino ad avere temi a sfondo filosofico che molto piacevano a Evil Chuck tanto che ne farà uso massiccio nei seguenti quattro disconi inumani prodotti dai Death.
Tutto questo fa di "Spiritual Healing" un album sicuramente originale (almeno per l'epoca), con una tecnica ad alti livelli, mantenendo sempre però violenza e velocità.
L'insieme di tutte queste novità è dovuto anche alla splendida performance del talentuosissimo James Murphy che successivamente suonerà con gruppi di alto livello come Obituary e Testament.
Purtroppo l'album presenta una notevole discontinuità, anche se ogni singola songs è ben curata e suonata in maniera ottima e canzoni come
"Living Monstruosity", "Altering The Future" e la Title Track meritano di essere citate.
In fine si può concludere dicendo che il grande Chuck Schuldiner con "Spiritual Healing" non avrà lasciato un capolavoro, ma sicuramente un buon disco, niente di meno.
