Pubblicato dopo 4 anni di silenzio artistico dal precedente album dei Blondie "The Hunter", è stato prodotto da Seth Justman della J Geils Band , contiene l'Hit single "French Kissing in the USA" top ten in U.K. scritto da Chuck Lorre, autore di molte sit-com di successo, una fra tutte "The Big Bang theory" il brano fu un successo in tutta Europa, entrò nella top ten in Gran Bretagna e in classifica hot 100 negli Stati Uniti. Altri singoli estratti furono "In love with Love" anche remixata da Stock, Aitken e Waterman, buon successo "dance" e lo slow "Free to Fall", Tra gli altri brani c'è poi il brano omonimo "Rockbird" esempio di pop-rock sperimentale scritto dal chitarrista Chris Stein, l'altrettanto elaborata "Buckle up" e la ritmata "Beyond the limits" firmata da Deborah Harry e Nile Rodgers. L'album è stato certificato disco d'oro in Gran Bretagna. La copertina ritrae un primo piano della Harry con lo sfondo dipinto da Andy Warhol. La versione stilizzata dell'album è stata usata come copertina del libro "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die".
