A volte sistemare la propria collezione di dischi può riservare piacevoli sorprese. Ripolverare vecchi dischi che ci hanno entusiasmato e che magari oggi non ci fanno piu' lo stesso effetto. Oppure l'esatto contrario, dischi con quattro dita di polvere che avrebbero meritato un ascolto piu' attento...
Ecco i Deee-lite per l'appunto, che avevo catalogato come gruppetto superficiale da singolo e niente più. Stimolato da alcuni video che girano sul web e che mostrano una certa capacita' dei tre sia tecniche che compositive ho deciso di analizzare meglio la loro opera. Premetto che la prima sensazione quasi 20 anni dopo è di un disco allegro e senza pretese e con questa attitudine andrebbe ascoltato. Per esempio, nel mio bar fa sempre il suo bel figurone e spesso prima di arrivare al conosciutissimo singolo, molta gente mi chiede lumi su di loro.
"World Clique'" esce nel 1990 dopo alcuni tentativi del trio di sfondare. I componenti della band sono una strana miscela multirazziale: Dj Dmitri arriva dall'Ucraina in seguito alla fuga e successiva richiesta di asilo politico dei suoi genitori. A New York si fidanza con Kierin Magenta Kirb conosciuta nel underground come Lady miss Kier. Sara lei la vocalist del gruppo. A loro due si aggiungera poi Towa Tei, dj di origini giapponese, l'unico dei tre che avra poi una discreta (ma molto interessante) carriera discografica.
Il disco, che ebbe un enorme successo negli Stati uniti è trainato dal singolo "Groove is in the heart" che a sua volta era trainato da un divertentissimo e lisergico video. E' proprio il groove che riescono a creare, con campionamenti, parti jazzate, tanto funky e una voce più che discreta a rendere questo disco apprezzabile. A parte il singolo sono molti i pezzi da segnalare e, per quello che mi riguarda, segnalo il dancefloor di "Try me on... I'm very you" condito da una sezione fiati e un pianoforte fantastici. "Good beat" non mi piace ma è stato comunque uno dei 4 numeri uno nelle charts americane. Stesso discorso per "The power of love". "Smile on" rallenta ma tromboni e xilofoni la rendono divertente e ballabilissima,magari ben avvinghiati... "What is love" retro del singolo, vira verso i sinth che, risultano un po invecchiati all'ascolto odierno. Il risultato però, è interessante grazie anche ai fonemi della signorina al microfono. Il pezzo che da il titolo all'album lo trovo trascurabile mentre il successivo "E.S.P" terzo singolo estratto, ricco di sincopi e di sospiri, mi mette voglia di muovermi. La traccia nove la salto perche tanto la conoscete tutti e comunque la trovo geniale e magnifica.
"Who was that" prosegue sulla falsa riga di tutto il disco, gradevole, cosi come le ultime 2 traccie l'ultima delle quali strumentale. Ma la song che mi ha colpito di piu è proprio la prima perchè penso che miglior introduzione non potesse esserci, un prologo con la P maiuscola. Scusate per il track by track, per la lunghezza della rece, scusate se a voi non piace ma, questa volta mi sono proprio lasciato prendere. Peccato non sia successo 20 anni fa quando ero giovane e pieno di energia. Salut!
