Il 6 aprile 1974 i Deep Purple partecipano all'immenso California Jam Festival, organizzato dall'emittente televisiva Abc, nel circuito automobilistico chiamato Ontario Speedway, vicino San Francisco. Oltre 300 mila persone accorrono per assistere ad uno dei più imponenti show rock di tutti i tempi: sul palco si succedono band quali Emerson, Lake & Palmer; Black Sabbath; Eagles; Earth, Wind & Fire, ecc... e naturalmente Deep Purple.
Nel backstage il chitarrista Ritchie Blackmore impone il suo tipico carattere controverso, poichè non vuole dare modo agli E,L & P di appropriarsi del ruolo di headliner.
Il concerto dei Purple si apre con le fiamme ardenti di "Burn", prosegue con "Might Just Take Your Life" in cui Hughes da il meglio di se negli acuti squillanti e nel cantato soul-blues. Terzo pezzo eseguito dall band è "Mistreated" con un'incredibile interpretazione di Coverdale che esalta il già grande coinvolgimento emotivo del pubblico. Si procede con un classico del gruppo britannico, "Smoke On The Water", non troppo stravolto da questa line up, ma abbastanza reinterpretato (ad esempio, una terza strofa che riprende la prima cantata però a due voci da Coverdale e Hughes), a seguire "You Fool No One", che presenta un'introduzione costituita dal tema di "Lazy", con un inserimento nel finale di un assolo di batteria di Ian Paice che sfocia in "The Mule".
Conclusione con i fuochi d'artificio con "Space Truckin'", e la sua immancabile improvvisazione interminabile e stupefacente che si conclude con la distruzione da parte del chitarrista di due Fender Stratocaster "palettone"; da ricordare un episodio celeberrimo riguardante proprio Blackmore, che prima sfascia con una delle due chitarre una telecamera che lo stava riprendendo, poi ordina ad un tecnico di incendiare con una tanica di benzina l'amblificatore Marshall alle spalle della band, i cui resti vengono gettati come immondizia sotto il palco dallo stesso chitarrista.
Un concerto memorabile che stabilisce il successo della nuova line up, che dimostra di poter raggiungere, se non superare la storica precedente.
