A dispetto della gran parte dei fans dei Deep Purple, io sono uno di quelli che ama la Mk IV, ossia quella con il chitarrista Tommy Bolin a sostituzione di Blackmore. Con lui, i Deep rilasciarono un solo album, l'ottimo (a mio parere..) "Come Taste The Band", ed il successivo Tour consueto.
Una delle prime tappe di quel tour fu proprio il Budokan Hall di Tokyo, dove i cinque fecero registrare una serie di quattro serate di sold-out!! (una cosa non da poco visto che è un auditorium da 15,000 posti). Da quei concerti fu ricavato questo vinile, rilasciato però solo nel 1977, a formazione già sciolta. Ma passiamo all'analisi di questo capolavoro.
Non appena abbasso la puntina, partono subito le note di "Burn" classico pezzo dei gruppo con il riff eseguito ottimamente da Bolin. Segue "Love Child" dal nuovo disco, canzone classica alla Deep Purple, con un assolo di tastiere al fulmicotone, che continuano imperterrite pure nella successiva "You Keep On Movin'" uno dei pezzi migliori dell'album, eseguito ancora meglio dell'originale. Poi una sorpresa, dato che Bolin afferra il microfono ed interpreta la sua "Wild Dogs" tratta dal suo album teaser! La canzone è una bellissima ballad di sei minuti accompagnata dall'ottimo Paice come sempre. Ennesimo pezzo dal nuovo disco, la velocissima "Lady Luck" che è un gioiello di Hard Rock. La canzone termina, mentre Coverdale fa un prologo per "Smoke On The Water" che Bolin non rovina affatto, anzi vi aggiunge un ottimo assolo di chitarra stile Clapton. La settima traccia è "Soldier Of Fortune" eseguita in una versione brevissima, ma splendida grazie all'interperetazione di Coverdale.
Le ultime due perle dell'album sono la parte strumentale di "Woman From Tokyo", in poche parole un assolo di tastiere del magistrale Lord come sempre, e per finire una bella interpretazione del classico dell'mk II, ovvero "Highway Star" dove il pubblico va letteralmente in delirio!
Concludo dicendo che è un album magnifico, che ogni fan del Rock in generale dovrebbe possedere. Personalmente è uno dei miei dischi preferiti dal vivo, ve lo consiglio, soprattutto il vinile, per assaporare bene l'essenza di un vero concerto dei Deep Purple.
