Venni a conoscenza del decesso di "Sthephen Maynard Clark", da un cazzo di 'amico' ipocrita, lui e tutta la sua famiglia di falsi perbenisti, in buona sostanza uno, che il nome di Clark, non era nemmeno degno di pronunciarlo. Le case popolari, e l'idiozia della mia età, mi fecero pensare che fosse figo, morire a trent'anni, imbottiti di merda e dimenticati da tutti. Poi nella primavera del 1992, i Def Leppard, diedero alle stampe "Adrenalize", il nuovo lavoro dopo cinque anni, il nuovo lavoro senza Steve, me lo comprai, lo ascoltai per qualche mese, fui così lungimirante da sentenziare che non era all'altezza del predecessore e... punto.
Punto un cazzo. La dipartita di Clark, oltre la tragedia, generò il più grande scompenso che una band come i "Leppards" potesse accusare. Il suono sporco, incisivo, graffiante e dannatamente sublime era opera sua. Ascoltate la strumentale "Switch 625", del 1981, capirete di cosa sto parlando. Il chitarrista, era il collante tra la melodia e l'irruenza, che differenziano una musica commerciale ma stancante, da una commerciale e cazzuta. Un album, inarrivabile nel genere, come "Pyromania", ne è un eloquente attestato.
In "Adrenalize", sei tracce su dieci, portano anche la firma Clark, nonostante tutte le sue parti furono registrate dall'altra guitar Phil Collen, ritengo che buona parte di esse, abbiano ancora quel retaggio della sua musica, brani come "Stand Up" e "Tonight" in effetti, furono scritti anni prima.
"Make Love Like A Man" e "I Wanna Touch U", sebbene siano due dei sette singoli estratti, e musicalmente accettabili, descrivono il lato deprecabile della band, con due chorus infatili, abbastanza imbarazzanti. "Let's Get Rocked", fu il singolo da traino, "White Lighting" una bella dedica all'amico scomparso, "Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad" la ballatona da MTV, e la conclusiva "Tear It Down" tirata e potente, il giusto atto finale.
"Adrenalize", deve essere ritenuto un album fortunato, considerato che all'epoca il Seattle sound imperversava ovunque, fu uno degli ultimi best seller, e ne seguì un monumentale tour. Ma è anche, uno spartiacque tra la vita di un gruppo, travagliato da eventi nefasti, ma in piena vena realizzativa e creativa, e una band, di ottimi musicisti, con una vita sana e serena, ma autrice di produzioni da esercizio.
I californiani Tesla, dedicarono all'inglese Steve Clark, "Song & Emotion" che pressapoco recitava "Quando inizia a suonare, improvvisamente la sofferenza svanisce"; mi piace pensare che Clark da quel lontano gennaio del 1991, non abbia più fatto dormire San Pietro e i suoi amichetti. .
