Dopo un ritorno decente come quello del precedente "Scar of the Crucifix", i Deicide ci riprovano con una formazione mutata per metà. Fortunatamente la scelta per rimpiazzare i fratelli Hoffman è ricaduta su due artisti eccellenti, un epico e tecnico Ralph Santolla e un Jack Owen che per i fan di death brutal non ha bisogno di presentazioni.
Anticipato dal singolo (con video -carino- annesso) "Homage for Satan", l'idea che mi ero, quasi, erroneamente fatto è che il suono si fosse in un certo senso ammorbidito, se così si può parlare, dato l'innesto di assoli tipicamente power. Invece ho cannato alla grande: tanta, ma tanta violenza viene sprigionata da "The Stench of Redemption", e il primo ascolto è stato abbastanza traumatico per le mie orecchie (non certo vergini a questo tipo di sonorità). Preso fiato dopo il mezzo shock, subito comincio a complimentarmi da solo per il buon acquisto: La prima, che è anche la title-track, contiene una parte strumentale black-death melodico davvero ganza; "Desecration" invece sembra presa in prestito da "Gallery of Suicide" dei cugini Cannibal Corpse (ed ecco che spunta fuori Jack il pelatone con i suoi riff caratteristici) per costruzione del pezzo e "melodia"; si passa a "Crucified for the Innocence" che presenta un ritornello fantastico, a tratti barocco per le linee di chitarra: decisamente una delle mie preferite assieme alla già nominata "Homage for Satan", semplice e diretta con un altro assolo melodico "abbomba" di Santolla; infine "The Lord's Sedition" che sorpresa-sorpresa, inizia con una melodia arpeggiata che ho collegato subito a quelle composte dal neo-suicida Jon Nodveidt leader dei Dissection.
Il resto dei brani sono quelli che meno mi hanno colpito, pur non togliendo assolutamente nulla alla loro validità. La prestazione dei musicisti è degna di nota, il batterista Asheim è una macchina da quanto è veloce, anche se un pò di creatività in più non sarebbe guastata (magari a discapito della potenza altrimenti detta "smakko"), il buon Glen Benton non delude sia per voce che per sputtanamento divino e fottendosene allegramente della figura da satanista pagliaccio che fà (ma in fondo gli vogliamo bene così com'è); le due asce sono formidabili, Owen ritmicamente parlando è ottimo, per quanto riguarda il solismo.... bè non l'ho trovato mai niente di che.
L'edizione deluxe contiene un mini poster raffigurante la copertina e quattro cartoline con le foto dei componenti francamente inutili (neanche fossero delle belle fighe...). Un ritorno davvero in gran stile che si spera continui anche per i prossimi appuntamenti.
P.S. Per coloro che su Debaser si infastidiscono per ogni cosa (e ce ne sono tanti): sò benissimo che una recensione su tal disco era già presente, ma volevo comunque esprimere un giudizio personale. Debaser è bello perchè è libero, non creiamo una dittatura per favore, grazie.

Questo disco è la fusione di più menti che con i Deicide non c'entrano molto, e proprio per questo ne esce fuori un disco veramente bello.
La sezione strumentale di questo bellissimo brano è quanto di più bello i nuovi Deicide possano fare.

Io a Glenn Benton gli voglio moltissimo bene perchè è l'unico a rimanere brutale sempre e perchè anche quando gli altri si tolgono il corpse paint, lui il suo crocifisso rovesciato in fronte se lo tiene.
Il loro grande ritorno è arrivato nell’oscurità di una nuova era ancora più satanica di prima.
