Dopo vent'anni di onorata e travegliata carriera non è facile rimanere sulla cresta dell'onda, almeno non lo è per un'artista qualsiasi, lo è invece per il gruppo in questione.
Trovare l'ispirazione dopo tanti grandi album, sforzarsi di dare ancora emozioni dopo aver spremuto il tutto fino alla buccia non sembra un buon auspicio... ma qui c'è Martin Gore, lui, la mente e la penna dei Depeche, sinonimo di garanzia totale con la sua vena compositiva mostruosamente sempre all'altezza. Il prodotto e ciò che ne esce nel 2001, a vent'anni esatti dal debutto Speak and Spell, è questo Exciter!
Cos'è Exciter? ... è un soffice affresco notturno di elettro-pop elegantemente interpretato con classe ed animo.
Una dolce mano che ti accarezza dopo averti rimboccato le coperte, che ti bacia sulla fronte e ti da la buonanotte nella brezza autunnale e ti sussurra nelle orecchie "Can you feel a little love".... che sa coccolarti con "When the Body Speak", "Freelove" e "Goodnight Lovers" ma sa anche motivare ed incentivare l'ascoltatore con pezzi più carichi quali "I Feel Love" e "The Dead of Night"; il tutto interpretato magistralmente da Dave Gahan qui meno spudorato e sboccato ma raffinato interprete delle suggestive sfumature create da Gore il quale dal canto suo trova sempre suoni efficaci e innovativi riuscendo ad associarli a quelli più classici ed acustici come nel singolo "Dream On".
Il lavoro in questione si presenta per l'ennesima volta superiore alla media delle uscite del periodo, non avrà la forza degli ultimi capolavori precedenti, ma riesce comunque a farsi ottimamente ascoltare puntando di più sull'ispirazione e su atmosfere quasi trip- pop, pacate e profonde.
La classe c'è tutta e non c'è bisogno di convincere nessuno, anzi sono le conferme a farci dedurre che i Depeche sono ancora un modello da seguire e sono ancora distanti anni luce dal cozzare in stereotipi qualunquisti commerciali. Sapranno pur farsi vendere, non può dirsi altrimenti di un lavoro così, ma mai spudoratamente e banalmente.
Espressivo e notturno, riflessivo ed intimista.

Le melodie vagamente dark sono state accantonate preferendo arrangiamenti solari e leggeri.
