Sgombriamo subito il campo da equivoci, questa raccolta è di molto inferiore come contenuti e qualità rispetto a 81/85 e soprattutto 86/98.
In questo cd si racchiudono 25 anni di carriera del gruppo inglese, si passa da "Just can't get enough" a "Precious" da "Enjoy the silence" a "Dream on" facendo un salto in "Never let me down again" per essere catapultati dalle parti di "I feel you". Questo best comprende 18 canzoni tra le più rappresentative del gruppo con in più l'inedito "Martyr" (pezzo che doveva essere contenuto in Playing the Angel ma che successivamente venne fatto uscire fuori dall'album per una questione di omogeneità e coerenza verso il sound dell'ultimo disco).
La raccolta è tutta qui, ne più ne meno dei pezzi ultra noti, lasciando da parte molte canzoni presenti in 86/98 ("Policy of truth", "Stripped", "Strangelove", "Behind the well", "Useless") paradossalmente hanno accantonato quelle canzoni che rappresentavano al meglio il lato personale del gruppo (In particolare quello di Martin Gore).
Si passa adesso al Dvd contenente 23 video e uno short film da 30 minuti con il quale si cerca di ripercorrere la carriera del gruppo attraverso i video più famosi (il semplicistico "Just can't get enough", il solare "Everything counts", l'impegnato "Never let me down again", il crepuscolare "Enjoy the silence", l'oscuro "Walking in my shoes", l'irriverente "It's no good"… ) forse l'unica ragione che porterebbe un fan a comprare questo best è proprio la collezione di video che partono dai primissimi lavori (In particolare i video dei primi quattro album non sono mai stati ristampati in Dvd, quindi si possono recuperare solo dalle vecchie Vhs) fino ai giorni nostri "Precious", "Suffer well" e "Dream on".
Il documentario che si trova alla fine è interessante e piacevole, ci sono le interviste a Vince Clarke, Alan Wilder e Flood oltre ovviamente a tutte le persone che hanno collaborato a stretto contatto con la band in questi anni, si spiega come sono nati i cavalli di battaglia del calibro di "Enjoy the silence", "Personal jesus", "Never let me down again", "Walking in my shoes"… tra l'altro ho notato che nel video di "Shake the disease" Martin Gore sembra il fratello gemello di Robert Smith (stessa acconciatura e stesso rossetto scarlatto).
Non so se questa raccolta può accontentare i fan più fedeli per il semplice fatto che il Cd racchiude solo quattro tracce che non sono presenti nelle due raccolte precedenti, però la collezione di video è ben fatta oltre che discretamente completa oltretutto il documentario è intrigante e curioso.
Indirizzerei all'acquisto di questo best solo i fan dell'ultima ora, per tutti i "vecchi" supporters l'inviterei a dirigersi verso l'edizione con il Dvd, se proprio non potete fare a meno di possedere questo disco, che rivela in maniera ancora più netta come i Mode non abbiano più le idee geniali di un tempo e che stiano vivendo di rendita dai capolavori del passato, lo dimostra il fatto che questo best è uscito solo per fini commerciali, di per sé questa raccolta non rappresenta niente di nuovo, semplicemente si ricicla il vecchio materiale.
