Una rosa bianca. A richiamare i fasti di "Violator" (laddove però la rosa era rossa). Una scritta stilizzata. A richiamare i fasti di "Songs of Faith and Devotion" (laddove però altro era il contenuto).
Guardi incuriosito questa copertina e vieni a sapere che i dM pubblicano il loro primo "Best of", in uscita il 13 novembre 2006. Tutti ne parlano. "Martyr" prima in classifica. I Depeche Mode che vincono gli Mtv Awards come miglior gruppo del 2006. Tanta pubblicità. Tanta promozione.
Ma tu vorresti ben altro. Vorresti ben altro da una band che ha un passato pesante. Che ha sulle spalle dischi come "Violator", "Songs of Faith and Devotion" o ancora "Ultra", dischi di ottima musica, prodotti da esperti del settore come Flood e Tim Simenon. Ti ricordi di Alan Wilder. E dei video di Anton Corbijn. Del video di "In your room" avvolto da un'aura di mistero, ornato di drappi di rosso porpora, di una lampadina che incombe dall'alto, e di riferimenti sadomaso.
Ti ricordi le grandi performance (Amburgo '84, 101, Devotional Tour, ma anche, perché no, il recente Touring the Angel filmato proprio in quel di Milano). Mentre sei avvolto dai ricordi quelli che capiscono qualcosa del mercato sfruttano le tue emozioni per ingannarti e vuotarti il portafoglio. Ed ecco questa sorta di autocelebrazione.
Un prodotto mutilo, perché non contiene "tutti" i pezzi da novanta del gruppo, ma soltanto i più commerciali, quelli che hanno fatto presa, e soprattutto classifica. Un prodotto inutile, perché due raccolte, fatte ad arte e con le palle, erano già state realizzate ("The Singles 81>85", "The Singles 86>98"). Ed ecco che ti avvolge una strana e inerte malinconia. Nostalgia per il gruppo che avevi imparato ad amare. Per il gruppo che ti aveva fatto sognare con gli uccelli dal becco incrociato del video visionario del genio Anton ("Walking in my shoes"), insomma per quattro profeti del nostro tempo. Per un gruppo che ti aveva da sempre sbalordito, disattendendo le tue aspettative.
Ma loro dicono no. Devi comprare questo prodotto. Cazzo, è un pezzo da collezione! Vuoi perderlo? Non puoi proprio adesso, tu che sei un nostalgico!
La malinconia si fa più forte, e sai che non puoi lasciarlo lì, in bacheca. Sai che dev'essere tuo.

Galeotta fu la tracklist. Molti piansero scorgendo "New life". Molti piansero ugualmente non scorgendo "Stripped" e "Behind the wheel". Alcuni risero di gusto e con compiacimento vedendo "Dream on". Alcuni (e tra questi ci sono io) hanno esclamato: "Che rabbia!" Rimpianto. Quello stesso "regret" di cui parla Martin Gore. Questo è quello che domina. Ma anche speranza per il domani. Per una produzione migliore. Per una gestione migliore del prodotto. Per un ritorno alla musica dei Depeche Mode.

Questa raccolta è di molto inferiore come contenuti e qualità rispetto a 81/85 e soprattutto 86/98.
Lo dimostra il fatto che questo best è uscito solo per fini commerciali, di per sé questa raccolta non rappresenta niente di nuovo, semplicemente si ricicla il vecchio materiale.
