Nella storia del metal estremo di matrice "nordica", che si tratti di black, death o altro, fin dall'inizio ha aleggiato una forma di "rispetto rituale o cultista" per gli estimatori, coadiuvato dall'impressionante miriade di gruppi e gruppetti di metallari inferociti (?) dediti alla glorificazione delle Forze Oscure (??) attraverso distorsioni trita-budella, ritmiche battagliere e urla demoniache (???). Di tutt'altro parere i detrattori, per i quali il "true black metal" fu (e, tuttora, rimane) uno sfogo adolescenziale, finito troppo spesso male (Burzum, Emperor...).
In questo salone affollato di buffe marionette, troppo spesso la fortuna ha voluto baciare band che di meriti non si è mai veramente fregiata, tra chi ha elevato a stendardo i propri limiti e stereotipi (Immortal) e chi con delle opere poco più che amatoriali (Dark Throne) ha dato inizio al filone "raw black" che tanto trastulla i feticisti del face painting. A soffiare loro sotto il naso il vero successo di massa però ci ha pensato chi ha infarcito il proprio suono di orchestre e sfavillanti costumi (Dimmu Borgir).
In mezzo a questo circo buffo, ci sono poche band meritevoli di vero interesse ma sfortunate, primi fra tutti gli svedesi Dissection. Troppo black per piacere all'alternativo col ciuffo rosso fuoco, troppo death per piacere al collezionista di audiocassette lo-fi, troppo vari ed intelligenti per entrambi, almeno musicalmente.
La band, dopo un buon debut album, nel 1995 ha sfornato il bellissimo "Storm Of The Light's Bane", pilastro death/black melodico epico ma mai pacchiano, magnificamente strutturato. Dopo un'opera così significativa, la strada sembrava spianata per cominciare a raccogliere successo, invece il leader Jon Nödtveidt ha pensato bene di commettere un omicidio e passare il decennio successivo nelle accoglienti carceri svedesi.
Nel 2006 escono sia Nodtveidt che questo "Reinkaos", e le cose sono cambiate, e molto. La reclusione ha spinto anche alla maturazione artistica? Forse, se non fosse che appena dopo il tour del Ritorno (anzi, Rinascita) il frontman ha deciso di terminare questa vita in un rituale di elevazione spirituale (????). Analizzando semplicemente l'ultima opera dei defunti Dissection, ci si accorge da subito che il nuovo percorso intrapreso era molto differente dalla carriera dei '90. Il black è completamente scomparso, il death metal è rimasto ai propri posti mentre il rock (esatto, in particolare quello dei '70) si è insinuato nelle trame di queste 11 tracce.
Si parte con l'intro "Nexion 218", un breve ma evocativo strumentale che suggerisce la vena melodica che durante il disco delizierà le orecchie degli ascoltatori. La seguente "Beyond The Horizon", in realtà, non è così memorabile come ci si dovrebbe aspettare da una prima canzone: infatti l'andamento è abbastanza standard e il ritornello non è molto azzeccato. Poco male, perchè la traccia successiva, "Starless Aeon", da cui è tratto un videoclip, è decisamente riuscita; le chitarre graffiano senza atterrare, la voce urla con rabbia ma non è cacofonica, la ritmica non fa miracoli ma supporta bene il pezzo fino al bellissimo ritornello. Ed ecco che la chitarra solista di Nödtveidt tesse trame preziose nella potenza della canzone.
Assolutamente eccezionale è la successiva "Black Dragon", introdotta da un arpeggio acustico ed echi di chitarra per sfociare in un riff rock settantiano (diciamo dei Rainbow riletti da un gruppo death melodico). Una ritmica solida e una voce espressiva (se non ci aspettiamo dei vocalizzi alla Roger Chapman) donano un'aria "groove" alla composizione. La successiva "Dark Mother Divine", si muove sulle stesse coordinate, con qualche scintilla in meno. Si passa poi alla più metal "Xeper-I-Set", una buona commistione di death melodico e ritmica slayeriana.
"Chaosphobia" rilassa per 40 secondi le orecchie con il suo arpeggio di chitarra acustica, ma "God Of Forbidden Light" attacca di nuovo con un riff settantiano su trame metal (non così estremo), e come "Black Dragon", colpisce il bersaglio: soprattutto, la chitarra solista del leader ci regala altri passaggi e note memorabili. Quando il songrwiting è ispirato, c'è poco da recriminare. La title-track è totalmente strumentale e, se non fosse per la durata, si potrebbe parlare di mini-suite: effettivamente si respira anche un'aria progressive (rock, non metal) su melodie epiche (senza tastiere ingombranti o effetti roboanti) di ispirazione classica. Grande performance solista, ormai non c'è più bisogno di sottolineare quale sia uno dei punti forti dell'opera in generale. Un pò interlocutoria "Internal Fire", simile all'opener (intro esclusa): death metal melodico piacevole ma un pò insipido.
Si è giunti alla chiusura, affidata alla già conosciuta "Maha Kali", che è simbolica dell'intero LP (e apripista come singolo dello stesso): metal melodico misto a rock classico (con un leggero sapore prog-rock), il tutto condito di suoni cristallini. Ancora una volta il songwriting è eccelso, la chitarra suona ispirata e l'intermezzo di voce femminile è riuscito.
Una piccola nota per i testi, i più potrebbero saltare questa riga: il tutto fa parte di un concept proto-filosofico atto all'"Invocazione Sonica Dell'Infinito Eone Oscuro". Si può capire al volo di cosa possono parlare le liriche, scritte "Behind Prison Walls", citando testualmente...
Non sorprendentemente questo album non vendè bene, lasciò scontenti i più agguerriti fan dell'old-style, che gridarono per l'ennseimo tradimento, e non attirò altri nuovi ascoltatori, forse anche per l'immagine ormai consolidata Dissection/Nodtveidt/galera. Peccato, in quanto l'album in sè (scremato dal piano filosofico o cultista) è veramente valido, che non raggiunge lo status di capolavoro assoluto solo per la presenza di un paio di episodi meno riusciti. E' un caso questi ultimi siano proprio quelli più classicamente death metal? Forse la dimensione nel quale si stava spingendo il gruppo prevedeva un allontanamento dalla scena metal. Non penso lo sapremo mai per certo.
