Live at Budokan signore e signori
Ebbene si, finalmente dopo un eccezionale Train of Thought Tour i Dream Theater registrano il 26 aprile 2004 al leggendario Budokan Halldi Tokyo.
La serata inizia come da copione con l'introduzione del basso di Myung a preannunciare l'apertura del concerto con As I Am alla quale segue inesorabilmente e senza pause This Diyng Soul, come sempre eseguita in modo impeccabile con le sue innumerevoli e velocissime scale musicali. Già dall'inizio del concerto si nota il gran momento della band, James LaBrie in questo Tour torna a cantare a livelli altissimi. Senza tregua si passa a Beyond This Life, un grande pezzo da Metropolis II che viene proposto in una extended version arricchita da un'avvicendarsi di assoli di chitarra tastiera e batteria in un tributo a Frank Zappa. Segue la stupenda Hollow Years dove Petrucci ci delizia con un assolo messo a punto per il ToT Tour.
Dopo queste dolci note arriva il momento delle due graffianti ed inseparabili War Inside My Head & The Test That Stumped Them All che concludono il cd n°1.
IL cd n° 2 inizia con Endless Sacrifice come sempre bellissima e coinvolgente che trasporta il pubblico con i suoi arpeggi e la calda voce di James.
Finalmente arriviamo alla sorpresa della serata: l'instrumedley; un qualcosa di veramente unico, l'esecuzione di un pezzo che a mio avviso rimarrà nella storia del prog. Questo entusiasmante pezzo viene eseguito in modo impeccabile ed ha come tema principale The Dance Of Eternity con la quale inizia, spaziando da Erotomania a Metropolis I, passando per Ytse Jam e i Liquid Tension per alla fine riallacciarsi al pezzo iniziale.
Dopo questo turbinio di stacchi, controtempi e riff elettrizzanti ci vuole un lento, ed ecco che arriva l'introduzione lunare di Trial Of Tears che fà sognare ancora il pubblico del Budokan, dopo di ché si passa a New Millennium dove Mike ci dimostra doti canore veramente inaspettate. E' la volta del solo di Rudess che precede la rispolverata Only a Matter Of Time.
Per la parte finale di questo secondo cd dal canto mio avrei preferito il keyboard solo eseguito al Palalottomatica - Rm mentre al posto di New Millennium ci avrei messo Honor Thy Fhater, ma tutto sommato le esigenze di scaletta vanno rispettate ed il risultato non mi dispiace affatto.
Ed eccoci arrivati al terzo ed ultimo cd, che inizia con i due pezzi di Six Degrees Of Inner Tourbulence ovvero Goodnight Kiss e Solitary Shell che come al solito vengono eseguite in modo perfetto e travolgente una dietro l'altra per far entrare il pubblico nelle atmosfere dell'album targato 2002, poi come un fulmine a ciel sereno arriva lo strumentale flusso della coscienza Stream Of Consciousness che carica ancora il pubblico con i suoi ritmi secchi e potenti, ancora da Six Degrees Disappear che sembra leggermente diversa dal solito, forse perchè accellerata di qualche battuta.
Dalle prime note è impossibile non riconoscere Pull Me Under, ormai pezzo storico e cavallo di battaglia della band che esalta tutti gli ytse jammer presenti. A questo punto i 5 fingono di aver finito lo Show ma rientrano alla grande eseguendo l'ultimo e stupendo pezzo In The Name Of God che ormai in mancanza di Acos è ottimo per chiudere i concerti. L'assolo di Petrucci porta all'estremo le sui corde fino a toccare l'ultima nota che fa tremare il cuore emozionando anche i non presenti.
Certo un finale con A Change Of Season sarebbe stato chiedere troppo, ma alla fine del concerto i DT erano più che soddisfatti del loro operato e noi li ringraziamo per averci ancora una volta fatto sentire della musica con la M maiuscola.

Le poche sbavature presenti fanno capire che non è un best of, ma un live.
Portnoy straborda da tutte le parti ed è talmente in forma da permettersi una performance solista spaventosa.
