"Click, clock, click clock..." la voce dell'ipnoterapista, le prime, struggenti note di "Regression"... sembra un sogno... e invece è tutto vero... Le scene dal vivo del "Teatro Del Sogno" ebbero luogo il 30 agosto 2000, al Roseland Ballroom di New York, per chi ha ascoltato "Metropolis Pt II", è quasi impossibile non versare le lacrime dinanzi ai suoni tanto familiari, riproposti nella coinvolgente atmosfera del live... pare un sogno, dal quale non vorremmo mai svegliarci... stiamo per tornare a riscoprire il viso spaurito di Nicholas, il volto di Victoria rigato dalle lacrime... i fantasmi di "The Miracle" e "The Sleeper", il sogno è finalmente realtà...
Quando odi le prime pennate di "Regression", ti accorgi subito che il leggendario John Petrucci è più in forma che mai... che la voce di James Labrie ti fa ancora sognare come sempre, anche se risente un po' degli anni... e la prima traccia ti percorre il corpo... fino ad "Overture 1928"... eseguita impeccabilmente dai Dream Theater... sono loro... il batterista metronomo umano Mike Portnoy, che con i suoi ritmi a doppio pedale ci darà il ritmo per sognare... ora senti anche John Myung, il suo Yamaha RBX JM2 ha ora un suono molto più netto, mentre un basso fretless scandisce alcune canzoni, Jordan Rudess, il tastierista forse non più giovane, ma di sicuro fortemente tecnico e a mio parere migliore del precedente Kevin Moore, di cui non senti la mancanza anche in tracce come "Metropolis I". Ed ecco "Strange Déjà Vu", eseguita forse un po' troppo pesantemente, ma comunque bellissima track... ora Jordan Rudess ci propone il magnifico intercalare "Through My Words" che a me strappa sempre un sospiro... e ora è tempo di "Fatal Tragedy" la cui prima parte viene riproposta in toni più profondi, che contribuiscono a renderne il tono drammatico, mentre la seconda parte strumentale è suonata senza una pecca, e riesce sempre a coinvolgerti... ora torna l'ipnoterapista, e tornano le note di "Beyond This Life", una canzone forse non molto orecchiabile, ma che offre sicuramente delle straordinarie prove di voce a arpeggi che commuovono sin dopo due minuti e mezzo... assoli divini, da godere senza riserve... atmosfere da gustare e su cui lasciarsi trasportare... questo è puro Progressive Metal! Ecco Ora "John & Teresa Solo Spot"... dove Petrucci fa degli assoli velocissimi, ma non è solo tecnica... è anche anima... tutto si stranisce quando senti il coro gospel di sottofondo, che secondo me ha un po' smontato la magica atmosfera del cd... ora, ecco il piccolo assolo di Petrucci, ed ecco che torna il sogno: "Through Her Eyes"... impossibile non commuoversi, dinanzi alla canzone più bella, più triste che tanto mi ha suscitato ricordi e sentimenti fortissimi, il dolcissimo ritmo di Mike e le note di John ci fanno ringraziare i Dream Theater per averci regalato una canzone così bella... ed ecco la stupenda "Home" con i suoi ritmi, i suoi cori e le parole che tanto ricordano la prima Metropolis riproposta in chiave orientale... bellissima, ti prende l'anima, il cuore, il livello tecnico è elevatissimo, ma a proposito di tecnica... "The Dance For Eternity" che altro non è che tecnica, non c'e molta anima, ma ci vuole una canzone così per comprendere chi stiamo ascoltando... ma, al momento dell'assolo del basso... senti poche note confuse... ecco un'altra pecca dei live.. il basso quasi non si sente... grandissimo peccato... ora cambi cd... e un assolo di Rudess ti riporta alla mente "One Last Time" e ti senti perso... proprio come Nicholas, dinanzi alla melodia della canzone, come in "The Spirit Carries On", stai per versare la lacrima prima del coro quando senti che il coro... è stato trasformato in un gospel... sono deluso... quella canzone è un po' un pezzo della mia vita, ma quel coro ha infranto l'atmosfera... ma ora è il tempo di sognare con "Finally Free", canzone magnifica... la mia preferita... in quella canzone è tutto, il segreto di Nicholas... e ti commuovi... non riesci a restare calmo... è troppo bella, ti trasmette tutto, quella canzone è la mia vita... e ora che ci sarà? senti degli shaker... un Rock Organ...è "Metropolis Pt I"... la genesi, la leggenda... dove per la prima volta abbiamo cominciato a sognare con Victoria... ti lascia di pietra eseguita con la 7-string guitar, perde un po' per l'assolo del basso a volume 2... ed ecco ora delle canzoni stupende, ma che non mi hanno trasmesso molto... "The Mirror", poi "Just Let Me Breath" "Acid Rain" infine "Caught In A New Millennium" sono canzoni carine... ma che quando senti le dolcissime note di "Another Day", la canzone che tanto adoro per la sua bellezza e animosità, tendi a scordare un po'... infine ecco un assolo di Jordan Rudess, che sa molto di toccato e fuga, molto classico, sicuramente bellissimo, forse non originalissimo... ed ecco che cambi ancora cd, e la trilogia di "A Man Beside Itself" ti circonda come una pioggia leggera... la trionfante "Erotomania", con la sua tecnica sconvolgente ti lascia senza fiato... ed ecco "Voices", una piccola gemma del Live, impreziosita dall'assolo spaccapolso di Petrucci... ti lascia appena in tempo per farti trasportare dalla stupenda "The Silent Man" dalle sue note che ti sanno sempre fare un po' piangere, dalle sue chitarre dolcissime... ma siamo alla fine... dopo la bellissima "Learning To Live",ecco "A Change Of Seasons" i suoi 24 minuti di canzone che spaziano arpeggi struggenti e ritmi sostenuti... ed è finito... sei ancora senza fiato.. .esclami: "Peccato per quel coro gospel e per il basso.." ma hai nel cuore questo nuovo modo di ascoltare Metropolis, quelle canzoni, quegli assoli, che hanno fatto la storia dei Dream Theater...e ora fanno parte della tua anima... "Now The Miracle and The Sleeper know that the third is love"

Sicuramente il più bel disco live mai edito dai Dream Theater, e adesso ci possiamo finalmente risvegliare dal sogno che ci ha catturati per tutti questi 3 cd!!
