Il suono di un organo dal sapore antico spezza il silenzio e s’impadronisce della stanza. Mi lascio abbandonare alla vibrazione, un viaggio indietro nel tempo. “Power and the Passion” parla proprio di questo, di una tormentata storia d’amore che travalica il tempo. Ma anche di come le relazioni umane, nel corso dei secoli, non abbiano seguito lo stesso passo evolutivo della tecnologia.
Un concept album forse ingenuo nelle liriche, ma decisamente valido nel contenuto, sia concettuale che musicale. Corre l’anno 1975 e i teutonici Eloy sono arrivati al proprio quarto lavoro, portando a compimento il cambio di registro stilistico ed espressivo iniziato con “Inside”. Abbandonato l’hard rock degli esordi, il gruppo si avvicina ad un prog sinfonico caratterizzato da ampie divagazioni strumentali. Una musica dal forte impatto visionario. “Power and the Passion” è un viaggio onirico che si sviluppa tra ipnotici giri di basso e tastiere a profusione, con l’hammond sempre in grande evidenza. Atmosfere essenziali, quasi fiabesche, che a tratti rimandano ai Pink Floyd del primo periodo. Partiture ariose sulle quali si stagliano le carezzevoli melodie delle chitarre, raramente aggressive.
Le note scorrono come immagini di un film. Dall’improvviso tuffo nel passato (“Journey into 1358”) alle melodie sospese della splendida “Love Over Six Centuries”, con i suoi coinvolgenti dialoghi recitati. L’amore che germoglia e si rafforza, passando attraverso storie di insurrezioni (“Mutiny”) e prigionia (“Imprisonment”). Ma il desiderio di ritornare alla vita reale è grande (“Thoughts of Home”) e la sua realizzazione (“Back Into the Present”) non è quella sperata. L’epilogo è infatti un canto di disillusione (“The Bells of Notre Dame”) e il protagonista si ritrova spaesato nella propria realtà e prigioniero di quel dolce ricordo. Niente lieto fine. Si arriva sempre al solito bivio: lasciarsi vincere dallo sconforto o continuare imperterriti per la propria strada? La scelta del protagonista di questa storia probabilmente non la conosceremo mai. Sappiamo invece che gli Eloy sono a tutt’oggi in attività. Una carriera quasi quarantennale, sempre vissuta nel sottobosco e pur caratterizzata da pregevoli lavori. La loro si che è una storia di ostinata passione.
