Con un titolo simile e visto che stiamo parlando degli Entombed, risulta molto facile immaginare il contenuto di questo doppio cd composto da sole cover; per la bellezza di ventotto satanici brani. Poco da dire sulla storia in musica della band svedese: sono stati tra i primi a diffondere il sacro verbo Death Metal in Europa come nel resto del globo; con quell'uso sistematico, almeno nella prima parte della loro carriera, di un suono di chitarra "crushing" e destabilizzante che ha fatto scuola per decine di gruppi nati dopo di loro.
Registrazioni effettuate tra il 1993 ed il 1999 e in seguito riunite in questo doppio formato pubblicato dalla label "Music For Nations" (altra etichetta che definirei fondamentale per la musica estrema) sul finire del 2002.
Un uomo ignudo, che galleggia nell'aria; su uno sfondo post-atomico al di sotto del logo gotico della band: così si presenta la copertina del lavoro che non annovero di certo tra i migliori degli Entombed. Ma diventa un valido strumento per capire le influenze e le band preferite dal gruppo, guidato dal carisma e dalla voce furente di Lars Goran Petrov.
Repulsion, MC5, S.O.D., Venom, Motorhead, Misfits, Unsane: una serie di nomi che meritano per prima cosa rispetto, visto la loro enorme influenza ed importanza non solo dal punto di vista musicale. Ma i ragazzi svedesi se ne infischiano del rispetto e coverizzano i brani in modo brutale, sventrandoli e facendoli letteralmente a pezzi. Senza alcuna pietà.
Due sono le canzoni che vanno secondo me approfondite: "God of Thunder" dei Kiss che viene registrata nel 1993 quando gli svedesi potevano ancora contare sui servigi alla batteria di quel portentoso fenomeno che è stato Nicke Andersson. Cinque minuti dannatamente (e te pareva se non facevo la citazione satanica!!!) Heavy di una pesantezza opprimente, ossessiva.
E soprattutto gli Husker Du di "Something I Learnt Today" (per i pochi, spero, che non lo sapessero tale breve sfuriata Hardcore-Punk apriva quel monolite sonoro recante il nome di "Zen Arcade"); una nuova prestazione maiuscola, di assoluto valore, con la voce pulita che almeno per questa volta lascia in disparte il growl primordiale che è stata un'altra caratteristica degli Entombed.
Si prosegue con Black Sabbath, King Crimson (!), Alice Cooper, Bad Brains, Twisted Sister fino ad arrivare, incredibile ma vero, a Bob Dylan: di tutto un po' senza alcuna barriera...THE BALLAD OF HOLLIS BROWN...
Due anni fa la band ha posto fine alla sua carriera, durata per più di venticinque anni. Per me un vero peccato, visto la portata e la valenza di buona parte della loro discografia...LEFT HAND PATH...
