Eric Clapton, verso la fine del 1969 si era ritrovato ad essere insoddisfatto della sua direzione musicale, principalmente a causa dello scioglimento all'apice del successo dei Cream prima e dal raffreddamento degli entusiasmi per i Blind Faith dopo. Quest'ultimo progetto in particolare ebbe modo di portare Clapton ad una vera e propria frustrazione, essendo il supergruppo già al centro della scena prima ancora di esser riuscito a svilupparsi musicalmente, a causa della fama universale del manolenta. Neppure nell'apparizione con la Plastic Ono Band, assieme ad Alan White, John Lennon e Yoko Ono, Eric era riuscito a trovare la sua direzione.
Gli orizzonti musicali di Clapton avevano bisogno di espandersi e l'ispirazione a sorpresa arrivò da Delaney e Bonnie Bramlett, in arte Delaney & Bonnie, una coppia sposata di ottimi cantanti (il marito Delaney pure chitarrista) orientati verso il southern rock, il country, il blues e il soul. Delaney & Bonnie fungevano da gruppo di spalla ai Blind Faith, e fra essi e Clapton, oltre che stima reciproca come artisti, nacque anche un buon rapporto di amicizia. Fu così che Clapton acconsentì a suonare la chitarra in due loro brani in studio, oltre a partecipare in un disco dal vivo.
Fu così che si ritrovarono a jammare insieme anche con gli ottimi membri della band di Delaney & Bonnie: il tastierista Bobby Whitlock, il bassita Carl Radle, il batterista Jim Gordon, il percussionista Tex Johnson, la corista Rit Coolidge e i fiatisti Jim Price e Bobby Keys.
Una tale band già pronta e in adorazione verso Clapton offrì a quest'ultimo l'occasione di incidere il suo primo album solista: riunendo dunque un vero e proprio ensemble, Clapton riesce facilmente a sfuggire all'etichetta affibbiatagli di icona/jammer di strumentali, spostando il suo stile verso un songwriting più incentrato su canzoni e ballate che non sui suoi virtuosismi e jam di stampo hardblues. Inutile dire che questa cosa spiazzò non pochi all'epoca, non foss'altro che per la presenza quasi insistente di fiati e di cori in background.
All'insegna dei fiati parte lo strumentale Slunky, suonato insieme a Leon Russel, autore del brano, una jam e niente più. Bad Boy è un blues potente e possente, bel wha-wha di Clapton nell'intro. Lonesome And Alone è un altro brano ricco di fiati uscito dal calderone di Delaney, in origine acustico. After Midnight è una canzone scritta da J.J. Cale e questa cover ebbe un enorme successo come singolo. Easy Now rappresenta il punto più alto del disco, una meravigliosa composizione acustica, in cui la chitarra si fonde magicamente nell'intreccio vocale di Clapton. Blues Power è scritta anch'essa con Leon Russel, anche qui ospite, con un cantato perfetto per Clapton, sia come prestazione che come contentui. Bottle of Red Wine è un pezzo inciso sul momento in studio, scritto in un momento di apatia compositiva. Lovin' You Lovin' Me è un pezzo scritto da Delaney insieme a Leon Russel ed in origine destinato ai Blind Faith, pezzo abbastanza sdolcinato e alla lunga non interessantissimo. I've Told You For The Last Time è una ballata d'amore nata da un'idea di Delaney e sviluppata assieme a Clapton, così come lo è anche Don't Know Why. Let It Rain è un altro fantastico brano blueseggiante che chiude l'album originale.
Da segnalare è l'ottima Deluxe edition, in due Cd, che, oltre a contenere l'album originale rimasterizzarato, contiene tutto il disco nei mix originali di Delaney Bramlett (difatti era lui il produttore) ed alcune interessanti bonus tracks: un Blues In "A", il brano Teasin' suonato da King Curtis insieme a Delaney e Clapton, e She Rides, la prima versione di Let It Rain con lyrics differenti, oltre alle prime due canzoni incise da Clapton con Delaney & Bonnie, Comin' Home e Groupie Superstar.
Insomma, il primo disco di Clapton è vittima di una forte influenza e della collaborazione degli amici americani conosciuti in tour. Un disco nel complesso buono, ma che forse delude un pochino per il songwriting poco improntato al virtuosismo chitarristico, che tutti in realtà si aspettavano. Gli assoli sono pochi per lasciar molto spazio ai sassofoni. Non tutte le canzoni sono da incorniciare, ma il livello rimane prevalentemente alto. Un album nel complesso buono, ma non è un capolavoro assoluto.
