Se Mahalia Jackson è "Lady Gospel", se Aretha Franklyn è "Lady Soul" e Billie Holiday "Lady Jazz", Etta James è stata sicuramente "Lady Blues".
Se cercate una musica e una voce in grado di farvi venire i brividi a ogni ascolto, questo album e soprattutto questa artista, diventata famosa negli anni '60, è quello che cercate. Ragazza prodigio scoperta da Johnny Otis, giovanissima viene scritturata dalla "Chess Records" per cui produrrà i suoi migliori (capo)lavori, oggi pietre miliari della musica "nera": tra questi spicca "At Last", il suo secondo, e più famoso, album studio.
E' un album che spazia e ibrida Jazz, Blues, R&B e persino Pop, in cui l'assoluta protagonista è la voce di Etta James: delicata, "soft", e incredibilmente profonda in "Anything to say you're mine", pezzo Jazz-Blues che apre il disco; lo stesso accade all'inizio di "My Dearest Darling", per poi esplodere nel ritornello in acuti di incredibile e intensa potenza, e qui chi non sente i brividi scorrergli sulla schiena è di pietra; e un brivido continuo lo regala, per tutti i suoi 3 minuti, il pezzo successivo, "Trust In Me", superba ballata Jazz-Blues estremamente toccante e intensa; si passa poi per la jazzante "A Sunday Kind of Love" e la blueseggiante "Though Mary"; "I Just Wanna Make Love To You" è uno dei più famosi pezzi R&B in assoluto, (tutti l'abbiamo conosciuta attraverso lo spot della Coca Cola che andava in onda qualche anno fa), in cui la James sfodera una voce graffiante, sensuale, oserei dire sexy, da provocante "Femme Fatale". Segue il pezzo in assoluto più celebre della nostra, nonchè una delle più belle e profonde canzoni "d'atmosfera" mai fatte, "At Last"; si continua con "All I Could Do Is Cry", sofferta ballata Jazz-Pop dal sapore sudista, la celebre "Stormy Wheater", e un'altro pezzo dalle venature Pop, "Boy Of My Dreams"; dopo di che, quattro Bonus-Tracks in duetto con Harvey Fuqua: "My Heart Cries", il famoso Blues di "Spoonful", "It's a Crying Shame" e la struggente "If I Can't Have You", che chiude il disco.
Un disco senza età. Un disco che è un monumento a una delle più grandi voci del XX secolo: una voce che sapeva, anzi no, sa emozionare come pochissime altre, un'espressività e una capacità di interpretazione senza tempo, che sa coinvolgere e emozionare, con la sua irresistibile, devastante intensità e profondità, ieri come oggi, nel 1961 come nel 2007 come sicuramente anche nel 2071: una cantante che trascende gli anni.
