Il Canada è una nazione dove il metal non penso sia molto diffuso come in Europa o in America, ma nel corso del tempo, con astuzia e con ottima preparazione, sono usciti dei gruppi che hanno segnato la storia dell'heavy metal. Ovvero i thrasher ANNIHILATOR, i grandiosi ANVIL e i terremotanti EXCITER !!
Quest'ultimi, capitanati dal chitarrista John Ricci, sono la "classica" band che, con il "solito" spiazzante brano anthemico, sono riusciti a creare un genere personale. Cioè lo speed metal. Gli Exciter sono considerati "i padri" di questo sottogenere, cioè uno stile musicale molto veloce, anche di più dei Motorhead e dei Tank, con delle piccole influenze degli onnipresenti Venom, una sezione batteristica molto veloce e una voce urlata e sgraziata. Il thrash della Bay Area sara' fortemente condizionato dallo speed, soprattutto band tipo i Possessed, i Metal Church e gli Overkill.
La band registrò nel 1983 il suo primo disco ufficiale, ovvero "Heavy Metal Maniac", che presentava un sound grezzo e veloce, con il cantante Beehler che raggiungeva picchi molto alti. Inutile soffermarci piuùdi tanto, perchè ogni parola è inutile e superflua davanti ad un CAPOLAVORO come questo. I successivi "Violence And Force" e "Long Live The Loud" continuarono a riscuotere grandissimo succeso da parte di critica e fans e a proporre buonissime canzoni.
"New Testament" non è un disco nuovo degli Exciter, ma è una raccolta dei maggiori successi ri-registrati e rienterpretati dalla band nel 2004, con l'ormai penultimo vocalist Jacques Belanger.
Il primo pezzo scelto è "Rising Of The Dead", una classica cavalcata supportata da una bella prestazione di Belanger. "Rising Of The Dead" conserva ancora oggi la potenza e l'impatto devastante di vent'anni fa, riuscendo a sprigionare la carica e la grinta del sound Exciter. Si prosegue con l'anthem "Violence And Force", dotato di quella straordinaria potenza e di quell'irresistibile refrain. I tre pezzi successivi, "Rule With An Iron Fist", "Rain Of Terror" e "Brutal Warning", sono delle scheggie di rara velocità e tecnica, con dei riff scatenati, il cantato indemoniato del vocalist che sembra Rob Halford ai tempi d'oro di "Painkiller"..
Con "Victims Of Sacrifice" si ritorna al periodo di "Long Live The Loud" e la canzone mostra dei ritmi meno sparati rispetto ai precedenti, diventando piano piano una buona cavalcata in pieno stile N.W.O.B.H.M. Si ritorna al passato con "I Am The Beast", pezzo ripescato dal terzo disco, dove la band dà una buona lezione a tutti i gruppi della Bay Area, potendolo considerare come il vero "il pezzo thrash" degli Exciter. "Pounding Metal" è un altro pezzo da novanta.
E' giunto il momento di "Heavy Metal Maniac": UN MITO! Un riff assurdo, un ritornello magico una performance da incorniciare di tutta la band. Sembra facile, eh!
"Long Live The Loud" è un'altra dimostrazione delle qualità tecniche e compositive degli Exciter. Si conclude con la bella "Ritual Death", dotata di un sound tipo i Metal Church, che termina questa interessante raccolta dei grandiosi Exciter di John Ricci.
