Dov'è finito Kevin Moore? È la domanda che in molti potrebbero porsi dopo aver ascoltato questo "FWX", decimo album in studio della band di Matheos.
Nei due precedenti capolavori "A Pleasant Shade Of Grey" e "Disconnected", che bisognerebbe obiettivamente considerare i livelli più alti della loro carriera, l'ex genietto dei Dream Theater aveva prestato la propria manodopera dando alla band un sound unico, probabilmente mai raggiuto in precedenza. In quei due album, le melodie e la sperimentazione eccellevano come mai prima...
In questo "FWX", invece, niente Moore, le tastiere sono affidate allo stesso Jim Matheos... e bisogna dire che tale assenza si fa sentire davvero. In questo disco infatti le tastiere hanno un ruolo davvero marginale limitato a qualche piccolo e impercettibile sottofondo e a creare effetti elettronici. Ma anche dal punto di vista delle strutture il sound della band perde buona di ciò che aveva guadagnato. A tratti sembrerebbe addirittura che la band si stia spostando verso una direzione più commerciale, e canzoni come "Simple Human" (da apprezzarne la potenza), "Another Perfect Day", la banale "Crawl" e la quasi punk "Stranger (With A Familiar Face)" che reputo la peggiore del disco, lo dimostrano chiaramente. I troppi riferimenti alternative e nu-metal non sono certo da disprezzare però fanno perdere all'album un po' di personalità.
Ma il disco con i suoi suoni cupi e le sue tonalità tristi si fa apprezzare comunque. Le canzoni che apprezzo di più sono la psichedelica "River Wide Ocean Deep", con una prima parte ricca di suoni elettronici accarezzati da una bella chitarra acustica, la nostalgica "Wish", con quella bella parte di piano, la triste "Handful Of Doubt" con la chitarra acustica ancora in evidenza ma ascolto volentieri tutte le altre canzoni, in particolare "Another Perfect Day" e "Left Here". Ciò non toglie che l'album sia un passo indietro rispetto ai precedenti due.
Spero davvero che i FW tornino un giorno, ma spero soprattutto che tornino a ripetere l'inimitabile "A Pleasant Shade Of Grey"!
