Nel 1970 I Fleetwood Mac, rinomata band rappresentativa della scena british blues, si trova ad una svolta, Peter Green lascia la band, le redini vengono, per causa di forza maggiore, prese da Jeremy Spencer ma soprattutto da il genio di Danny Kirwan che molte volte non viene neanche citato nelle varie line ups dei Mac, ma a mio avviso è uno dei piu grandi autori di brani che la terra d'albione abbia mai avuto l'onore di ospitare. Iniziano cosi le registrazioni di "Kiln House" un album misto, troviamo le influenze piu vintage R'n'R di Spencer contrapposte alle eleganti composizioni di Kirwan. L'album segna anche l'ingresso nella formazione di Christine McVie, (ex Chicken Shack e futura moglie di John McVie) che ne realizza la copertina e presta la sua voce in un brano.
L'apertura "This Is The Rock" è tutta di Spencer, una pastiche del rock'n'roll piu anni 50, seguita da "Station Man" un brano firmato Kirwan e Spencer che anche nelle seguenti line ups la band ha riproposto live. "Blood on the Floor", "Hi Ho Silver" strizzano l'occhio sempre al rock'nroll tanto amato da Spencer, per arrivare ad un brano notevole firmato Kirwan "Jewel Eyed Judy", una ballata che sa tirare fuori gli artigli nei chorus, con "Station Man" i brani piu interessanti del lato A.
SI apre il Lato B con "Buddy's Song" un omaggio a Buddy Holly, seguita da "Earl Gray uno strumentale firmato Kirwan, avvolgente sequenza di accordi e di melodie create dalle chitarre che si sovrappongono creando cosi una texture molto astuta (una gemma). "One Together" ricorda che Spencer è ancora li con i Mac e si sente. "Tell Me All The Things You Do" altro brano scritto indovinate un po? dal grande Kirwan, la melodia risuona nella mente a lungo anche dopo che il brano termina, una cavalcata rappresentativa del periodo early 70's con stacchi coinvolgenti. Chiude "Mission Bell" epilogo dell'album con la voce di Christine. Come già anticipato l'album segna un punto di svolta importante nella storia della band, gettando le basi per quello che verrà, soprattutto i due album seguenti con l'ingresso di Bob Welch e le composizioni di Danny Kirwan.
