Uno degli album più mediocri che io abbia mai sentito.
Dave Grohl aveva pescato il jolly col debutto dei suoi Foo Fighters, nel 1995. Un demo sapientemente remixato contentente canzoni fresche e frizzanti, anche piacevoli. Il successo però gli diede la testa, e Grohl si convinse di essere non solo un grande batterista, ma anche un frontman autorevole nonostante una voce da cani e un songwriter notevole, senza ricordarsi che se non fosse stato per Cobain oggi forse farebbe il benzinaio sulla tangenziale.
Il risultato fu questo "The colour and the shape", davvero indegno. Il primo singolo è "Monkey wrench", una specie di "its the end of the world as we know it" fatta dai Green Day, imbottita di stereotipi orecchiabili per il pubblico di MTV. Patetici, senza contare che questo tipo di singolo verrà ripetuto immancabilmente negli anni successivi. Poi abbiamo un reperto da museo dell'orrore come la fracassona "Enough space" (con quella alternanza di lento/veloce tipica dei Pixies, ma con un centesimo della loro genialità), e una serie di ripescaggi dal mercatino dei Nirvana come "Hey Johnny Park", "My poor brain", "Wind up" e "My Hero", che non fanno altro che annoiare, perché a differenza del suo ex datore di lavoro Mister Grohl non sa dare quel tocco che vivacizza una formula così semplice.
Stendiamo un velo pietoso su "See you", perchè il pezzo deficiente alla "Big me" deve esserci per contratto in ogni album. Un paio di ballate tanto per gradire, infine: "February stars", un pezzo che Wayne Coyne potrebbe scrivere coi piedi in una cattiva giornata e la temibile "Walking after you", sorta di ballatona-da-accendini alla James Taylor, ideale per una pubblicità della Coca-Cola. Unico pezzo decente è "Everlong". che deve la sua fortuna al consueto video-macchietta (con quei denti del resto Grohl ha gioco facile). Buona canzone, anche se lo stile è palesemente riciclato da Jay Mascis.
Insomma, di questo album è stato persino festeggiato il decennale. Roba da pazzi. Dave, torna a fare il batterista che è meglio, trova qualche altro supergruppo alla QOTSA!
