Quando uscì questo disco, il periodo della scena rock blues inglese (detta anche “British blues”) stava per terminare, ed i Free erano stati gli esponenti di spicco di quel genere assieme ai Fleetwood Mac (i primi, quelli con il grande Peter Green saldamente al timone!!!) a John Mayall con i suoi Bluesbreaker, Eric Clapton Ten, Years After e diversi altri.
Nonostante la loro vita musicale durò solamente dal 68 al 73, i Free, ben più di numerosi altri gruppi di quella gloriosa scena, lasciarono un solco profondo nella storia del rock e furono di ispirazione per molti. Essi sono stati precursori di un hard blues allo stesso tempo potente e melodico, ricco di ritmi veramente sincopati come non se ne erano ancora mai sentiti e di grande pathos emotivo che poi nel corso degli anni ha influenzato centinaia di musicisti.
Rispetto ai due dischi precedenti (“Tons of Sobs” e “Free”) questo "Fire And Water" è decisamente più pulito e meno grezzo e nonostante strizzi l’occhio ad una platea più ampia il sound non perde la passionalità tipica del blues più viscerale.
Il gruppo era composto da Paul Rodgers alla voce (divenne poi cantante dei Bad Company, dei Firm, e di una squallidissima reunion dei Queen al posto di Mercury!!!), un cantante dalla voce profonda e potente dotato di una grande espressività ed in grado per questo di cimentarsi efficacemente sia con i brani più duri che con le ballate. Paul Kossov (fresco reduce dai Black Cat Bones di Barbed Wire Sandwich) alla chitarra invece era uno strumentista atipico per quel periodo. Allora sulla scena inglese andavano alla grande i chitarristi super tecnici alla Clapton o super veloci alla Alvin Lee, Paul invece era un chitarrista decisamente essenziale; il suo stile era caratterizzato da poche note molto trascinate, allungate, secondo una tradizione che affonda le sue radici con Albert King. Il suo stile era ricco di malinconica espressività (ascoltate le poche e lunghissime note su "Heavy Load"). Alla batteria sedeva Simon Kirke, un batterista essenziale, certamente non fenomenale che faceva bene il suo dovere mettendosi totalmente a disposizione della band. Il bassista, Andy Fraser, era senza dubbio l’elemento più giovane e talentuoso; si era formato in quella straordinaria palestra musicale che erano i 'Bluesbreaker' di John Mayall e può essere considerato a tutti gli effetti un precursore, il prototipo del bassista moderno. Con lui il basso ha raggiunto una dignità che fino ad allora era sconosciuta sulla scena inglese (negli USA già c’erano state a valorizzare lo strumento la Allman Brothers Band e i Grateful Dead).
Proprio nelle copiose ed inusuali linee melodiche del basso sta tutta la peculiarità del sound dei Free (ascoltate il suo grande lavoro sotto "Mr. Big"!!!). Peccato che il successo per questo gruppo sarà solamente effimero, infatti dopo l’exploit di questo disco, seguiranno una serie di dischi perlopiù mediocri prima dello scioglimento.
1 - Fire And Water - Ad aprire l’album troviamo l’omonima title track, che strizza l'occhio ai nuovi suoni hard, veramente una grande canzone, sincopata e lievemente psichedelica, dove possiamo subito apprezzare il peculiare suono della chitarra di Kossov che sferra i suoi lamenti lancinanti ben sorretta da una ottima sezione ritmica.
2 - Oh I Wept Oh I Wept - è la prima ballata del disco ricca di melodia e trasporto, con una splendida prova vocale di Paul Rodgers che dopo averci mostrato la sua grande incisività nel brano precedente, ci mostra invece il suo lato più intimista e melodico.
3 - Remember Remember - è ancora una ballad melodica con la chitarra di Kossov decisamente più in evidenza rispetto alla canzone precedente e soprattutto quello del basso di Fraser che guida il brano verso traguardi melodici che ricordano il southern rock della Allman Brothers Band.
4 - Heavy Load - la successiva “Heavy Load” è invece molto notturna, avvolgente e malinconica; splendida ancora la performance vocale di Rodgers vero mattatore del brano.
5 - Mr. Big - oltre ad essere uno dei grandi classici della storia del rock, e forse il brano che meglio ci permette di apprezzare tutta la genialità del basso di Fraser che guida in maniera magistrale il brano mentre la sei corde di Kossov graffia con brevi e ficcanti incisi. Veramente bellissimi i botta-e-risposta tra chitarra-basso.
6 - Don’ t Say You Love Me - è ancora una ballad dalla grandissima presa.
7 - All Right Now - un pezzo straordinario, con un tiro pazzesco, dal riff tagliente ed indelebile, attualissimo, senza dubbio il brano simbolo dei Free ed un vero e proprio inno generazionale. Mostra al meglio, ma come del resto è apprezzabile in tutto il disco, il loro sound sincopato, grezzo, viscerale, drammatico e a tratti furente, con grandi punte di pathos. La melodia è veramente grande e il ritornello ti entra in testa per non uscirne più, certamente uno dei brani più celebri della storia del rock. Merita menzione lo splendido assolo di chitarra di Kossoff.

Non siamo davanti ad un capolavoro, però... è semplicemente un ottimo album, godibilissimo a quasi quarant’anni dalla sua uscita.
Kossoff crede che una nota al posto giusto valga più di sette suonate coi denti a velocità stratosferica.
