“Faceless” è il terzo lavoro di un quartetto statunitense di Boston, che riesce decisamente a convincermi più di quanto lo facciano alcuni loro colleghi meglio conosciuti, quali, ad esempio, quei falliti dei Nickelback. Partiti come cover band degli Alice In Chains, i Godsmack derivano appunto il loro nome da un pezzo dell’album “Dirt”, e sono già stati immortalati da alcuni come gli eredi stessi della famosa combo di Seattle, non fosse altro che per il nome scelto dal gruppo e per il sole tribale, da loro recuperato e riutilizzato come marchio.
In realtà, da un punto di vista musicale si sono piuttosto distaccati, fatta eccezione per la costante presenza di certi riff metallici e per la serie di canzoni formata da “Releasing The Demons”, “Dead And Broken” e “I Am”, dove le atmosfere spesso lente, contorte e perverse sembrano stagliarsi come un vero e proprio tributo a Layne Staley. Gli assoli non mancano e non deludono, giustamente curati ed eseguiti. Il loro stile, in particolare nei ritornelli, fa uso massiccio di una miscela di chitarre possenti, spaccata dalla voce potente, profonda e diretta di Sully Erna, nonché contornata da testi feroci, pessimistici e tutt’altro che banali. Il canto del singer trova il modo di imporsi, dirompente quando accelera e trascinante quando sfila armonioso nei tratti più soft, ossia in quegli intervalli che hanno il solo scopo di raccordare fra loro manifestazioni di sincera rabbia.
Violenti quanto basta, che pur essendo capaci di essere sporadicamente melodici (una melodia sempre magnificamente ambigua), non hanno paura di fare sul serio quando è il momento opportuno. Infatti il disco sfoggia un repertorio duro, a partire dalla traccia d’apertura “Straight Out Of Line”, davvero pesante ma assolutamente coinvolgente, che porta già da subito a sfociare nell’ Hard Rock tradizionale, più che nel Grunge. Infierisce ulteriormente “Faceless”, distorta e caotizzante, mentre si assottigliano i toni con “Changes” e “Re-Align”, più distensive, ma non senza creare turbamento. L’hit “I Stand Alone” sembra provenire da una voragine, tanto è rintronante, e non è da meno la successiva “I Fucking Hate You”, sfibrante, distruttiva ed impulsiva, al punto da dilatarsi in una plumbea pulsione di istinti.
Per non lasciare un eccessivo sapore amaro in bocca, l’album si chiude con il rituale di “Serenity”, in cui la musica suadente materializza un’alba fresca e luminosa, una riedificazione dello spirito dopo una temporalesca notte consacrata alla confusione e alla scarcerazione dell’odio.
