I Grand Funk Railroad sono tra i gruppi meno conosciuti nella scena hard rock anni '70 ma sono un gruppo che merita l'attenzione degli appassionati del genere. Il trio nato a Flint, il sobborgo industriale di Detroit, incide nel 1970 "Closer To Home" La differenza con i tre precedenti album è una maggiore ricercatezza in fase compositiva. Una chitarra acustica ci introduce al riff di "Sin's a Goodman Brother" una canzone che sprigiona potenza e sembra dover esplodere in un ritornello che non arriva mai ma in questo caso non è neseccessario, visti gli ottimi spunti delle strofe con un cantanto da brividi e tutto il gruppo che macina note. La seconda traccia è "Aimless Lady" un trascinante rock-funky-soul in cui risaltano la voce particolarmente soul di Mark Farner(che è anche il chitarrista del gruppo) e il basso di Mel Schacher sempre presente e ricco di ottimi spunti ritmici. È proprio il basso ad introdurre la terza canzone "Nothing Is The Same" altra canzone davvero potente con una grande performance da parte di tutto il gruppo. "Mean Mestreater" è la ballad del disco, introdotta dal piano elettrico. Molto bella l'interpretazione vocale che da un tocco in più a una canzone semplice ma di buon impatto. "Get It Together" è una song abbastanza ripetitiva ma contiene bellissimi cori gospel femminili che salvano forse l'episiodio piu trascurabile del disco. Si ritorna ad un "Funk-Soul-Rock" con "I'Dont Have To Sing The Blues un'altra canzone potente e melodica a tempo stesso davvero molto riuscita. "Hooked On Love" parte lenta per arrivare poi a una parte piu ritmata molto coinvolgente. Il punto forte di questa settima traccia è lo scambio di vocals tra il leader e il batterista Don Brewer dotato di una voce davvero interessante. Ultima traccia, forse la più ricercata del platter, è: "I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home" una canzone di nove minuti e più davvero ben strutturata con tanto di arrangiamento di archi nella parte centrale e sostenuta stavolta dalla chitarra acustica. In definitiva un album davvero molto buono da parte di un gruppo che è sempre stato maltrattato dalla critica perché considerato troppo grezzo e rumoroso; ma che i veri fans dell'hard rock non devono farsi sfuggire vista la gran dose di energia e melodia che convivono nelle canzoni dei Grand Funk.
