Sono stati un gruppo purtroppo transitorio, ma sono anche stati uno dei gruppi più solari degli anni ’80, vicini agli Aztec Camera e influenzati dagli Orange Juice.
Sei ragazzi inglesi, acqua e sapone pieni di una potenziale energia allo stato puro da vendere e la conferma è data da questo fantastico Album “Pelican West”, un vulcano esplosivo di Jazz-Funky, ritmo afro-americano-latino e qual si voglia aggiungere, tanta purezza nei suoni e nei testi e un ritmo da sballo, mai sentita tanta carica in tutte le tracce di un Album completo, mai!
Ma fondamentale e rappresentativa è la voce di Nick Heyward, una mina vagante... Sul gruppo non c’è troppo da dire visto che sono durati tre anni a dir tanto, e due album all’attivo, ma il segno tangibile di un frutto ben maturo eccolo qua, che li portò alla notorietà e alle alte classifiche in Inghilterra e non solo. Meraviglioso e per me indimenticabile, perché è veramente bello, una valanga di allegria assicurata all’anima e senza sorta di alcun dubbio, averne avuti ancora di gruppi così, che anni sono stati! Dodici tracce da sudare e dalla serie.... come dimagrire divertendosi, basta mettersi a piedi nudi e lasciarsi andare.... “Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)" è un’esplosione atomica di trombe, percussioni afro-latino, impossibile stare fermi, è una carica di ritmo e canto totale “Love Plus One” meravigliosa ballata, lo xilofono d’apertura accompagna sax, chitarre acustiche, e clarinetti “Lemon Firebrigade” tutti gli strumenti possibili immaginabili agglomerati in una sorta di carnevale esotico “Marine Boy” tromba, percussioni, chitarre elettriche, pianoforte e la dolcissima voce di Nick a tutto spiano si inseguono a vicenda in una sorta di ballo a ruota “Milk Film” il rombo di questa auto decappottata che si avvicina a tutta velocità, introduce un’assicurata pazza gita panoramica “Kingsize (You’re My Little Steam Whistle)" la traccia “più difficile” nel ritmo-suono-voce senza una minima sosta, e le percussioni si fanno valere come sempre “Fantastic Day” fermarsi per risposare un attimo? Non è possibile, e allora si continua a ballare all’infinitooooooooooooo “Baked Bean” bollicine d’acqua, urli di richiami della giungla, trombe impazzite e le percussioni sono da urlo!
“Show Girl” sembrerebbe che finalmente ci sia un brano lento, ma che dico! Non posso crederci è stata un’illusione temporanea e chi si ferma, è perduto! “Love’s Got Me In Triangles” inno all’amore da urlare a pieni polmoni, voce carismatica al massimo “Surprise Me Again” mi fa impazzire questo pezzo, è una sorta di macedonia esotica da divorare in un sol boccone “Calling Captain Autumn” la traccia finale intonata da usignoli e voci al megafono sono una gara di successione vocale da non poter descrivere, il più bello dell’Album, pura adrenalina, direi.
Ricapitolando, categoricamente è impossibile stare fermi, ti senti una spinta globale che ti penetra nella pelle fino ad esplodere nel cervello. Ragazzi? Sono stramazzata per terra, sono senza fiato.... CHE ALBUM!!!!!!
