A volte bisogna piegarsi all'evidenza e ammettere che un'opera sia bella di per sé e non perché faccia riferimento a chissà quale movimento d'avanguardia o tra le righe abbia nascosti messaggi subliminali o intellettuali. A volte, poche volte, purtroppo. In un mondo musicale spaccato a metà tra l'estremo contenutismo e il vuotissimo poppismo, trovare un disco che si infila in mezzo con tanta maestria e secchezza commuove il sottoscritto.
"The Neon Handshake" (2002 @ EMI Records) è il primo lavoro degli Hell Is For Heroes, band di ragazzotti inglesi nata nel Sud Ovest di Londra nei primi del millennio e nei suoi albori prolifera di EP. Vita facile, subito acchiappati da una major. Insomma, le premesse non sono certo le stesse di quelle osannate band "che-la-strada-se-la-famo-da-noi-il-resto-ci-puzza". Eppure?
Emozioni, tagli, schegge impazzite, liriche semplici ed acute e tanta, tanta passione. Basterebbe questo a descrivere l'album e, forse, dovrei fermarmi qui. A che serve convincervi che pur facendo chiarissimo riferimento ad un movimento EMO quanto mai inflazionato i nostri ragazzi escono dal marasma con canzoni meravigliose nelle linee vocali (bravissimo il cantante Justin Schlosberg) e nelle mai troppo intricate, quanto, piuttosto gustose chitarre? "Five Kids Go" è salire sul letto e buttarti a piedi uniti giù sul pavimento per fare più casino possibile alla povera condomina 80enne che abita di sotto. I ragazzi hanno anche avuto la bell'idea (sempre per non esporsi a critiche troppo scontate) di invitare i Deftones a merenda, ebbravi ("Out Of Sight"). A che serve dirvi che "Night Vision" è forse una delle più belle e coinvolgenti cavalcate (attenti che i cavalli non hanno i fari fendinebbia) rock degli ultimi anni? La potenza delle chitarre è inarrestabile ma i toni non sono mai da "taglio di vene" anzi, una strana, notturna, luce brilla sul disco, sarà mica il Neon? I ragazzi hanno coraggio e ingenuità da vendere e il rock ritmato e salterino di "I Can Climb Mountains" rappresenterebbe il loro singolo perfetto se non fosse che poi fanno uscire un mostro di carica energetica come "You Drove Me To It". Piatti in primo piano, ma in lo-fi, chitarra lontana e poi?salto di qualità (audio e non solo) e un ritornello terribilmente catchy, con tanto di seconda voce semi-screamo in sottofondo, e le teste ballano e i capelli dondolano. Stanchi ma soddisfatti lasciamoci cullare da "Slow Song". Ahhh, finalmente il pezzone lento, struggente, che tanti amano(odiano)! Attenti perché il finale è da cardio-palma, mi ricorda "Post Tour, Pro Judgment" degli Aereogramme, se non fosse che questo è un disco EMO! Maledizione!
Ma a cosa serve che mi ammazzi a dirvi queste cose? Credo a niente, ma l'ho fatto lo stesso (che burlone che sono).
