Agli inizi degli anni 90', molto probabilmente erano questi i discorsi che i fan degli Helloween tenevano, su come la band tedesca oramai si fosse ammorbidita, prima con la pubblicazione di "Pink Bubbles Go Ape" (1991), e poi con il già citato "Chameleon" (1993), due album che avevano letteralmente spaccato in due il seguito del gruppo, oltre all'esser stati fortemente attaccati dalla critica, vista la scelta di puntare verso pezzi più pop, leggeri e commerciali.
Anche se al giorno d'oggi questi due album sono stati decisamente rivalutati, e addirittura in alcuni casi elevati come le migliori uscite delle Zucche di Amburgo, fra il '91 e il '94 non era proprio così.
Due flop uno dietro l'altro, e come se non bastasse, l'abbandono del cantante Michael Kiske contribuì ulteriormente al veloce disfacimento della band, che si trovò all'improvviso senza la sua punta di diamante, quella voce che nei due "Keeper Of The Seven Keys" aveva fatto tanto sognare, ora se ne era andata.
Sostituire Kiske era pressochè impossibile,ma gli Hellowen non si diedero per vinti, e scelsero come nuovo cantante Andi Deris, ex Pink Cream 69 e Nameless, con un range vocale completamente differente da quello del suo predecessore, più soft, ma non per questo impossibilitato a raggiungere (quasi) le vette vocali di Kiske in pezzi come "Eagle Fly Free" o "Future World", che saranno reinterpretate in futuro da Deris nei vari tour in maniera eccelente.
Nel 1994 vede la luce "Master Of The Rings", sesto album delle Zucche, e che già dal primo ascolto non fa assolutamente rimpiangere Michael Kiske dietro il microfono. Il cosidetto "Happy Metal" sembra esser ritornato in casa Helloween, basta ascoltare le prime note di "Secret Alibi" o il trascinante ritornello di "Perfect Gentleman". Neanche la parte più heavy dela band sembra essere stata messa da parte, e proprio per l'appunto la veloce e massiccia "Sole Survivor" viene posizionata come pezzo iniziale.
"Why?" mostra il lato più melodico degli Helloween, con Deris in forma strabiliante, e neanche la canzone più articolata, "Mr. Ego (Take Me Down)" di quasi 8 minuti, non riscontra cali qualitativi, riuscendo a non far calare l'attenzione all'ascoltatore. Volendo trovare a forza dei difetti, non convince appieno "Where The Rain Grows", che diventa troppo anonima nel ritornello, mentre "The Game Is On", pur essendo divertente quanto basta, è esattamente identica nell'andazzo a "Perfect Gentleman", mentre "In The Middle Of A Heartbeat" risulta essere troppo, troppo scontata come ballad.
Come detto Deris svolge un ottimo lavoro in "Master Of The Rings", e seppur qualche calo in alcune parti, questo lavoro sarà il primo di una lunga serie di ottimi album che usciranno a distanza ravvicinata l'uno dall'altro. Gli Helloween sono criticati ancora tutt'oggi per non aver mai cambiato radicalmente il loro sound, di non aver mai provato a rinnovare la loro attitudine, ma è quando si ascolta un album del genere, che viene istintivo dire "E perchè dovrebbero?"
