Gli Immortal nel 1999 ci deliziavano con uno dei dischi black più belli di sempre. Un capolavoro gelido di aggressività e trati di poesia musicale.
Al cuore dell'inverno. Sembra quasi un inno ai gelidi venti delle loro terre. Semra un inno al freddo e al gelo. Non solo nel senso ambientale, ma quasi fisico. Un gelo fattosi musica, fattosi arte pura e semplice. Penso che mai nessun gruppo black metal abbia raggiunto un tale livello di espressività, tristezza, desolazione e smarrimento, di completo gelo. Sembra che ogni singola nota sia stata concepita con un fiocco gelido di neve nelle nostre orecchie. Dimenticatevi gli Immortal degli esordi, con le sfuriate di violenza musicale e l'allergia alla melodia: questo disco straripa di novità eccelse, con inaspettate aperture melodiche che rafforzano l'inverno che percepisco ogni volta che li ascolto.
Ma nella sua apparente e dolce freddezza si rivela devastante quasi quanto una tempesta. Mai un disco black fu così simbolico per me, tanto da evocarmi simili assurdità. Ma è tutto vero, sin dall'opener "Withstand The Fall Of Time ", con quell'intro che fa rabbrividire. La glacialità è ai massimi livelli anche nelle parti vocali dove Abbath dà il meglio di sè. Non pensavo che dopo la dipartita di Demonaz potesse uscire un capolavoro simile, eppure questa realtà si conferma già dalla seconda traccia "Solarfall" che sembra quasi un presagio di inverno infinito così come sembra rievocare la discesa delle tenebre innevate la seguente "Tragedies Blows At Horizon". Anche i titoli sembrano sintomatici di questa incedibile neve che mi sommerge all'ascolto di tale maestosità. Non posso rimanere oggettivo davanti a tanta gelida e cristallizzata bellezza, e dunque continuo ad inoltrarmi nell'interperie con "When Dark & Light Don't Differ" e sento il buio sommergermi. Ma davvero raggiungo lo stupore massimo con "At the heart of winter". Capolavoro assoluto questa canzone, inno alla glacialità. C'è ancora spazio per l'ultima lama di ghiaccio nella spalla, per poi spegnere rabbrividendo lo stereo e cercare di riprendersi da quanto ascoltato.
Gelido, glaciale, innevato. Questo disco non mancherà di emozionarvi, di stupirvi, di scioccarvi. E vedrete che l'inverno che ho sentito io e che hanno sentito in tanti, rapirà anche voi.
