Il celebre "Flight of Icarus" viene rilasciato durante l'aprile di quel 1983 che vide il successo internazionale della band, e la pubblicazione di un altro dei suoi singoli più famosi: la celeberrima the trooper (di cui non parleremo qui). Estratto dall'album "Piece of Mind" in suo supporto fu destinato al commercio soprattutto del suolo statunitense , dove la band non aveva ancora raggiunto un successo pari a quello dell' Europa. Di conseguenza il brano abbraccia sonorità classiche di quegli anni ed è piuttosto standard, senza denotare troppa inventiva o picchi di creatività.
"Flight of Icarus" è un brano dall'andazzo piuttosto lento e quasi trascinato che fa drizzare l'orecchio durante il ritornello orecchiabile (ma nulla di più), ma soprattutto durante l'ottimo assolo di Dave Murray e il suo ideale proseguo ad opera di Adrian. Dickinson è ancora nel suo momento migliore e ne dà prova magnificamente. Non è nè un capolavoro nè uno dei brani migliori di "Piece of Mind" ma consente ai Maiden di ottenere una buona popolarità anche nel suolo a stelle e strisce.
Con una velocità più sostenuta e maggiore convinzione nel tiro generale di tutta la song "Flight of Icarus" avrebbe potuto meritarsi una migliore riuscita che avrebbe influito non poco sulla qualità dell'album (che a mio parere rimane il meno ispirato e deciso dei dischi anni 80', per via di una produzione smussata e moscia). Ad ogni modo una canzone di qualità.
La b-side è stavolta una cover molto interessante: "i Got the Fire" dei Montrose; ben eseguita e pimpante, gode di una buona prestazione da parte di tutti e coinvolge pur senza la carica dell'originale, una buona seconda traccia che farà la felicità degli appassionati di harris e co.
