Vi piace il new progressive rock anni '80, quello per intenderci rappresentato da gruppi come Marillion, Pendragon e Pallas? ...Allora potreste provare a procurarvi questo bel lavoro partorito nel 1988 da una band immeritatamente poco conosciuta.
Un pò di storia: gli It Bites, nati a Londra nel 1982, esordiscono 4 anni dopo con il discreto "The Big Lad In The Windmill", che conteneva anche l'hit single "Calling All The Heroes". Ma è proprio con il secondo lavoro "Once around the world", probabilmente il più riuscito, che la musica si fa più elaborata e coinvolgente.
La loro proposta è un progressive rock solare, moderno e ritmato, dominato dal solismo di Francis Dunnery (cantante ed eccellente chitarrista), che talvolta vira verso il pop (come in "Midnight"), o l'hard (la funanbolica "Rose Marie"). "Kiss Like Judas" è il brillante e orecchiabile singolo apripista (di cui qualcuno forse ricorderà il video ambientato in una chiesa gotica), "Yellow Christian" una delle gemme più preziose di questo album. Naturalmente una prog-band che si rispetti non può evitare di misurarsi in una mini-suite: in questo caso si tratta della title-track di 15 minuti, caratterizzata da svariati cambi di atmosfera e dai virtuosismi di Dunnery.
In definitiva un disco da riscoprire e una band dimenticata troppo in fretta. Voto: 3,5
Per la cronaca i nostri, pubblicati un terzo album dalle sonorità più dure e un live di commiato, nel 1990 si sono sciolti dopo che Dunnery ha lasciato per tentare la carriera solista. Recentemente riformatisi con un diverso chitarrista (proveniente dagli Arena), sembra siano in procinto di pubblicare un nuovo lavoro.
