Avrei voluto recensire i 4 capolavori dei Jefferson ma chiaramente essendo arrivato un po' tardi non mi resta altro che recensire il loro primo lavoro, certo un album che non può competere con gli LP realizzati con la Slick e Dryden ma secondo me comunque da rivalutare.
In questo primo album datato 1966 i Jefferson non sono ancora nella formazione classica con Grace Slick alla "voce" e Dryden alla batteria. Al loro posto abbiamo Signe Anderson e udite udite Skip Spence alla batteria. Quest'ultimo nato come chitarrista lasciò il gruppo dopo la realizzazione dell'album per dare vita ai grandi Moby Grape, famoso gruppo Acid-Rock-Blues di San Francisco.
Diciamo subito che la Anderson pur essendo inferiore alla Slick se la cava benissimo, dotata di una voce potente e ispirata ci regala brani di forte sapore blues come ad esempio "Blues For An Airplane" e "Chauffeur Blues".
Intanto la macchina sonora di Kaukonen e Casady ci fa intravedere il futuro sound dei Jefferson in brani come "It's No Secret" e "Let's Get Together" (ma ascoltate anche il basso di Casady in "Chauffeur Blues") che verranno riprese molte volte dal vivo dal gruppo in una memorabile versione a Woostock. Il brano che più mi colpisce per la ritmica e per gli effetti devastanti della chitarra di Kaukonen è "Let Me In" sicuramente il brano più ispirato e innovativo del disco. Non mancano anche classici ripresi all'epoca un po' da tutti come "Tobacco Road" con Balin e la Tolly che spingono al meglio sul registro più alto.
Un album quindi da riscoprire, anche perché è stato quello che ha dato un po' l'avvio a tutto il movimento, non scordiamoci infatti che a livello nazionale sono i Jefferson i primi ad aver strappato un contratto ad una grande casa discografica, la RCA. Dopo di loro li seguiranno tutti i più grandi dai Grateful Dead ai Quicksilver.
