In "Smile From The Streets You Hold" regna la passione e la compassione, intesi come dolore e comunione del dolore. Soprattutto spirito di comunione, che porta alla possibilità, alla speranza.
Frusciante utilizza registrazioni appartenenti a un lasso temporale che va dal 1988 al 1996 per pubblicare questo album, con il fine ultimo di comprarsi la droga con i soldi ricavati dalle vendite. Utile ricordare però che, anche se la mente alterata di Frusciante gioca un ruolo chiave nella registrazione delle canzoni, ciò è vero solo in parte quando si parla della scrittura delle stesse. La maggior parte del materiale è stato infatti scritto ben prima della sua dipendenza dalla droga.
John Frusciante scrive atmosfere e sensazioni, apre se stesso alla musica con il conseguente svantaggio di risultare più vulnerabile. Tutto ciò si ritrova nell'album; ma si individua anche una vena d'allegria quasi folle, che porterà inevitabilmente a scoprire che la situazione sta per tornare sotto controllo, che c'è una possibilità, che forse vale la pena di sperare, di impegnarsi. D'altronde con la buona volontà si ottiene tutto. Poi venne il 1998, e il resto è storia.
