Texas Slim, Delta John, The Boogie Man, Johnny Williams, Little Pork Chops, John Lee Booker, John Lee Cooker ed altri, dietro a questi pseudonimi di inizio carriera, utilizzati per aggirare le regole contrattuali, si nascondeva in realtà uno dei più grandi e importanti bluesmen di sempre ovvero il gigantesco John Lee Hooker, che aveva già contrassegnato in maniera indelebile il blues del dopoguerra sin dal suo primo singolo del 1948 inciso per la Modern Records, che conteneva, così tanto per gradire, due gioielli che diverrano dei classici ovvero "Sally Mae" e "Boogie Chillen'" rispettivamente il lato A e B.
Dalla premessa fatta quale titolo mai potrebbe avere il suo primo disco se non "I'm John Lee Hooker" e a mio parere anche per affermare il suo stile unico e inconfondibile. Uscito nel 1959 per la Vee Jay Records l'lp contiene 5 brani incisi nel gennaio dello stesso anno e i rimanenti 7 sono stati registrati in varie sessioni tra il 1955 e il '58.
Si comincia subito con una perla come "Dimples" (del '56) Hooker è qui supportato da Eddie Taylor alla 2° chirtarra, George Washington al basso e Tom Whitehead alla batteria, riff e melodia divenuti famosissimi. Già da questa prima traccia si riscontra il tipico stile boogie alla chitarra di John Lee e l'immediatezza quasi primitiva del suo Detroit e Chicago blues. Con la stessa formazione segnalo anche la sinuosa e ammiccante "Baby Lee" che chiude il disco.
Ma i brani che segnano indelebilmente questo disco sono quelli incisi nella sessione del '59 e in particolar modo "Hobo Blues", "Boogie Chillun" (cambio di vocale per una rilettura della già citata "Boogie Chillen'"), "Crawlin' King Snake" e "I'm In The Mood" (personale variazione di "I'm In The Mood For Love" pop hit del '35), in questi pezzi "Hook" è in solo: la voce è come sempre robusta, calda ed aspra, mentre la chitarra suona l'inconfondibile e tipico stile ossessivo e magnetico che è divenuto un vero e proprio marchio di fabbrica di Lee, il tutto è sospinto ritmicamente dal backbeat del suo piede. Tutti questi brani erano già stati incisi precedentemente da John sempre per la Modern Records (tra il '48 e il '51), ma queste sono versioni di prim'ordine, e a mio parere "Boogie Chillun" rimane la versione migliore tra le svariate che ha inciso. Di "I'm In The Mood" (con l'aggiunta della chitarra di Taylor) personalmente continuo a prediligere la prima versione, quella dell'agosto 1951 con Eddie Kirkland alla 2° chitarra, comunque anche questa è una splendida variante.
Il disco non si esautrisce certo qui, altri brani sono di alta qualità e questo è una pietra miliare della lunga e polverosa strada del blues, e finito l'ascolto non si può fare altro che dire: "Sì! Questo è proprio il grande John Lee Hooker!"
