Se tra tutti i difetti di una compilation vogliamo trovare qualcosa di positivo questo è di certo la capacità di essere un ottimo mezzo per avvicinare i distanti e i curiosi.
Non ci sono tematiche, non esistono fili conduttori, non è presente un vero e proprio significato tra un brano e l'altro se non quello di riassumere nel miglior modo possibile una carriera artistica.
In questo caso non si parla semplicemente di una carriera artistica qualsiasi bensì di un padre fondatore, uno di quei geni che hanno per sempre cambiato il mondo delle sette note.
Le linee di basso, tenute col pollice, le pause di enfasi alla fine dei fraseggi ed una serie di effetti, legature, picchettati veloci e vibrati hanno generato il suo stile personale. La particolarità della sua invenzione sta nella composizione che si articola, nel tema principale, attorno ad un unico accordo suonato in maniera ostinata ed ipnotica. La voce calda e rauca ma non per questo stanca, monotona e ripetitiva segnerà per sempre il modo di interpretare un testo su una qualsiasi melodia di milioni di uccellini canterini. Se iconograficamente parlando, Elvis viene considerato il re del rock, sulla stessa linea guida possiamo affermare senza alcun dubbio che John Lee Hooker è il monarca del blues, musica semplice e misteriosa, rilassante ed energica, cool e radicata nella terra, evasiva e meccanica, inspiegabilmente sexy e trasgressiva.
Consiglio ai curiosi questa raccolta per il semplice fatto che è l'ultima a essere stata pubblicata prima della scomparsa del nostro bluesman nel 2001 e quindi approvata dall'autore stesso. Tra i 20 brani proposti in "The Essential Collection" fanno la loro porca figura: "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer", "Down At The Landing", "Ground Hog Blues", "Bang Bang Bang Bang", "Walkin' The Boogie" e la straordinaria "I Can't Quit You Baby".
Il genio di John Lee Hooker contaminerà milioni di musicisti in tutto il mondo, difficilmente altri autori riprodurrano fedelmente lo stile del capostipite ma verranno comunque folgorati inevitabilmente dalla magia del blues.
