È un vero peccato che un album come "Get Lifted" di John Legend sia passato dalle nostre parti un po' in sordina, nonostante un singolo d'impatto come "Ordinary People" (molto meglio, però, la versione piano e voce che quella remix); un ulteriore segno di come, in ambito pop, il peggio abbia ormai preso decisamente il sopravvento.
John buon pianista d'impostazione classica, qualcuno forse lo ricorderà giovanissimo nel brano "Everything Is Everything" di Lauryn Hill, compositore anche per nomi di grido come Alicia Keys e Kenye West, suo mentore, è, per me, una delle speranze più concrete di una "rebirth" del Soul, lontana da improbabili e anacronistiche restaurazioni, ma anche capace di ritrovare dei chiari punti di riferimento e di rapportarsi con personalità e rispetto alle "roots". Pur non disdegnando melodie orecchiabili e accattivanti, basi ritmiche spinte simil-rap, sarebbe sbagliato confonderlo con la maggior parte delle nuove proposte dell'R&B, talmente simili da parere quasi indistinguibili. John, nonostante la giovane età, dimostra di sapersi destreggiare a meraviglia tra i "mostri sacri" della Black, guardando in particolare a Marvin Gaye e Stevie Wonder come a modelli di riferimento.
Il brano d'apertura "Let's Get Litfed" mette subito le carte in tavola: bassi che "pompano" discretamente su una classica e ben congegnata soul-song, cori alla old Motown compresi, un riuscito connubio tra tradizione e modernità. Tutti gli episodi dell'album si orientano in questo senso, riuscendo quasi sempre nell'operazione, indicando ai "fratelli" quella che a lui pare la retta via: rap sì, ma a piccole dosi, innestandolo sull'aurea tradizione soul-gospel-R&B. Quando si hanno obiettivi così alti, oltre ad nome d'arte che suona alquanto impegnativo, i mezzi non possono, non devono, difettare; e a John non mancano le doti sia di compositore e strumentista che di arrangiatore, olte che di brillante performer, con un timbro vocale che "inchioda". In "Used To Love", "Alright" e "I Can Change", duetto con Snoop Dog, vi è forse qualche concessione di troppo al mercato, alle mode del momento, senza mai però scadere nel dozzinale. Ma già con "She Don't Have To Know" siamo vicini all'eccellenza del genere. "Number One", "Stay With You", "I Don't Have The Change", in quest'ultimo accompagnato dalla sua famiglia al completo, dimostrano che insieme all'ascolto dei classici vecchi e nuovi, il bambino prodigio deve aver dedicato non poco del suo tempo ad accompagnare i cori gospel nella chiesa battista della natia Springfield.
Un sana religiosità, un certo afflato mistico, circolano comunque in tutto il lavoro e risultano non di maniera, ma sinceri e sentiti. "Refuge", pezzo alla Lauryn Hill, la prima a credere in lui, e "So High", ballad di classe superiore, sono ulteriori argomenti a favore del nostro.
L'implicito messaggio di John Stephens, in arte Legend, è chiaro e noi siamo felici di accoglierlo: scacciare i "mercanti" della Black dal "tempio". Non ci vogliono solo addominali alla Tyson, con contorno di generosi glutei shakeranti, per essere un artista.
