Dopo l'esordio, a soli diciannove anni, di "London Conversation" del 1967, dove gli elementi donovaniani e si uniscono ad uno stile chitarristico vicino a quello di Bert Jansch, John Martyn - il cui vero nome è Ian McGeachy - pubblica oltre ad un paio di buoni dischi, nel '71 il pregevole "Bless the Weather". Lo stile si sta facendo sempre più caratteristico e solido, riduttivo inserirlo nel panorama della scena del folk-revival. A questo punto, Martyn è pronto per pubblicare il suo più importante lavoro: "Solid Air". Il disco esce nel 1973, per la Island. Presenti nel disco, oltre Richard Thompson, diversi componenti dei Fairport Convention, che arricchiscono il disco con i loro preziosissimi contributi.
L'album parte con la title track, "Solid Air", dedidata all'amico Nick Drake, che di lì ad un anno sarebbe prematuramente scomparso, suicida.
Il brano, forse il più bello della produzione di Martyn, si muove su atmosfere fumose e rilassate, a tratti jazzate - bellissimi gli interventi di sax - con la chitarra acustica che se nelle sonorità può ricordare il genio di Tanworth-in Arden, ha uno stile piuttosto originale. Il contrabbasso è molto presente, si lega perfettamente al brano. Originalissimo il modo di cantare di John Martyn. Brano senza tempo, un capolavoro.
Si cambia d'atmosfera con la seconda traccia "Over the Hill". Qui le sonorità sono più folkeggianti, grazie anche ad un bel lavoro con le chitarre e con uno splendido accompagnamento di mandolino del buon Richard Thompson. Una sensazione di spensieratezza, di freschezza, di sana "ruralità". Come scrivere un grande pezzo con soli due accordi. L'atmosfera si fa più cupa con "Don't Want to Know", con belle parti di piano elettrico, con la chitarra in evidenza, un brano di grande stile ed eleganza, un jazz-blues che si fa ricordare. A questo punto, con "I'd Rather Be The Devil" di S. James. Qui le atmosfere cambiano del tutto, i suoni acustici vengono deformati da echo e prendono nuova forma: brano di difficile catalogazione, Martyn lo fa suo, reinventadolo, grazie anche all'estro degli altri musicisti, che raccolgono le sue sollecitazioni.
Il contrabbasso ci riporta alla calma, con "Go Down Easy". Brano affidato principalmente al solo Martyn, suggestiva la parte vocale, efficace la chitarra, dalla sonorità particolarmente "legnosa". "Dream By The Sea" è anch'essa ricca di spunti jazzistici, specie nell'uso del sax. Il canto è molto più aggressivo e particolarmente "bluesy". Le chitarre in "loop" creano un efficace tessuto sonoro. Una sorta di jazz-psichedelico.
Grande salto stilistico con la successiva "May You Never", pregevole pezzo acustico, praticamente per sola chitarra e voce, più Joni Mitchell che Nick Drake in questo caso. Martyn sfoggia, senza inutili eccessi, una buona tecnica con lo strumento. Nuovamente in atmosfere blues con "The Man In The Station", con il tipico canto "strascicato" di Martyn, fraseggi bluesy di chitarra elettrica. Pezzo elegante e di sicuro effetto. Prima di una versione live di "I'd Rather Be the Devil", c'è "The Easy Blues", "easy" solo nel titolo, dato che l'arrangiamento di chitarra è tecnicamente molto valido. La voce di Martyn è splendidamente a suo agio in atmosfere blues. Dopo un paio di minuti, il brano curiosamente, si trasforma in maniera drastica.
Poco altro da aggiungere, un disco da ascoltare, da sentire. Un capolavoro.
